The Papal Mass in Glasgow, Scotland has begun. There were only two candles carried in the entrance procession; however, there are seven candles at the altar – three either side of the altar and one on it behind the crucifix.

Many of the bishops were unable to vest correctly. Of course, the Holy Father is vested correctly.

The altar looked as it had been thrown together by some DIY amateur using some cheap wood.

While the particulars of the aesthetics could have been handled better, I for one practically shed tears of joy when I heard the revised Gloria from the Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman. It was simply majestic. I am now awaiting the revised Sanctus. It is beautiful. I managed to get my hands on the sheet music. I am greatly impressed. At least my black eyeliner is not running (it’s supposed to be waterproof). 😃

For me the most moving moment was when the Gifts were presented. As far as I can tell not all those candles are lit!

Im glad I am not the only one shedding tears of pure joy!
What a blessing for all, but esp this weekend for our UK brothers and sisters…Im so happy for them…I have no doubt this trip will bear fruit for many for years to come…Maybe not the culture as a whole, but the the individuals who have to live amongst that culture…

I loved what bits of the Mass I was able to catch, even if the “church” was a bit modern (what can one expect for a what seems to be a converted ampatheater). I’ll try to watch as much coverage as I can, I’m praying that this visit will lead to something conceret and good, even if I can’t qutie put my finger on what that would be right now lol.

I have great faith that the Holy Spirit can break forth thru the modern aspects of what we see and still touch the hearts and souls with the love of God.

With that love I have great faith that His people will be strengthened and blessed and draw ever closer to Him.

Yes, some how despite the modernss of it all… Still, the reverence which which the Holy Father celebrates and the power of his message and presense really shown through. I have great expectations that the Holy Spirit will be with the the Pontiff as he visits the UK. I have great hope and expectation that this visit will be very effectual.

I got kind of teary-eyed when the little handicapped boy went up in the Presentation of the Gifts, and when the young girl received Communion at the end of the Holy Father’s reception line [for want of a better term]. They looked so sweet!

I think the music was pretty good-was that the Mass composed by James MacMillan? I also recognized some of the Scottish hymns that were sung. Didn’t see or hear Susan Boyle, though…wonder when she came in?

I thought it was pretty cool for the Holy Father to close his homily in Scots Gaelic! And in his Bavarian accent, too!

Seriously-he did another excellent job in his homily. I call it ‘a shot across the bow at the secularist agenda’! Way to go, Papa Benedict! 👍

Are there any links to a transcript of his homily? Or maybe a link to a video of the Mass?

Well I googled the guardian at the suggestion of the blogger, and as I suspected they certainly did their best to spin the visit in a negative light thus far. No commentary yet on the Pontiffs homily.
Yep, a lot of negative spin. All of that was blown away for me when I saw the crowds gathered today, cheering and waving the Papal banner. And that was just on TV 😃 On Saturday God willing I’ll be at Hyde Park, with even greater numbers.

Let them squawk all they want. There are still faithful Catholics in the UK who aren’t bending to pressure or hiding their faith.

Ya, those were really neat, as well as when he was leaving he stopped to bless a crying baby and another child.

She sang at the end after the Holy Father had left and while he was getting into his car and such.

It was a wonderful Mass. Though I think I did see and priest walking down the rather steep steps, trip and drop some of the hosts from the paten he was carrying. But really a wonderful mass.

Yes. It was the Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman. In fact, it was historical because it was the first time that the English-speaking world heard the revisions of the Roman Missal formally set to music (at least insofar as the Gloria, the Sanctus and the Memorial Acclamation were concerned). 👍
