Its well known that Hitler left the Church alone for the time until he fried his bigger fish. Had things gone his way, he would have tried to extinguish the Church along with the Jews, Slavs, Gypsies and everyone else who didn’t fit into his “plan.”

occupying the vatican wouldn’t have gained him anything, and would have been done at a disastrous PR cost.

He was rational enough to get the catholic party vote in Germany and talk the Vatican into a concordat. He didn’t need to occupy the Vatican.
