It was Pastoral, not a state visit. Probably why there is much fuss by a few…state funding and all that.

On the other hand, it was nearly 30 years ago - when the troubles in Northern Ireland were a major preoccupation and people like Ian Paisley were shouting about the naughtiness of the Catholic Church.

I get the impression that people care even less now.

If the Pope were to stay out of every country that exhibits, even in its official activities, as well as its culture, rabid anti-Catholicism and even personal attacks on him, he would have to remain a prisoner in the Vatican as 19th Popes viewed themselves.

Ian Paisley would be shouting from the rooftops against the Catholic Church even in the absence of any Papal visit at that time. Simply because he is Ian Paisley.
