It’s something I’ve seen for a while in many questions on CAF.

Is it a mortal sin to listen to Lady Gaga? Is it a mortal sin to see the Twilight films? Is it a sin to think a girl is beautiful? Is plastic surgery a mortal sin?

Today there was a question over whether it’s a sin to eat food that tastes good!

This is a rant, but what’s going on with people?

For some people it’s scrupulosity. For others it’s simple confusion about moral theology. For still others it may be they are realizing some part of their life is not right and they are trying to get help in their discernment of that, even if the evil aspect is more subjective than objective.

Perhaps it’s that malaise of our time, especially among the young, the inability to employ rational thought. Everyone needs to be fed answers like baby food because they grew up as zombies in front of TV’s and computers. I mean, if people could analyze multiple variables and come to the right conclusion, we never would have got Obama as president. Most people still don’t know much about him because they don’t know how to research! Whether the topic is sin or anything, people are dominated by feelings. They do not understand the Natural Law, hence any little question of sin becomes just a “rule” for them and not something related to the state of their soul.

When one asks these questions it does not indicate a true paranoia of sin but a true inability to look for the answers in the right place. It also indicates a propensity for the easy, “Readers Digest” answer instead of a true desire to find a deep, meaningful explanation, with a neglect of actually entering into the mystery that is our spiritual path, of which sin is only a part. Questions like these on this forum fail to reach a depth necessary for true concern much less paranoia.

👍 very good answers.

just to add to what’s already been said, with the exception of those who suffer scrupulosity, many people are unable to use their own brains to form moral logic patterns and then correctly discern the answer. this inability is primarily due to a lack of education and practice, but maybe also some laziness.

I think we missed the most common, for many of these it is trolling.
