I like watching them for the entertainment factor but get really annoyed when they have these folks using sage and other new age items to cleanse houses and then using Catholic prayers. If the places really have a problem, why not just get a “real” Catholic priest in there?

I like Ghost Adventures, but that priest he uses is not a Roman Catholic priest but from what is called the “Old Roman Catholic” church. Not really sure what this church is.

Those are totally worthless shows. Nothing but reaction shots and jump scares.

Here’s an article about them:

I had a friend in high school whose parents were part of this denomination (he eventually got involved with wicca). So, I’ve known about this denomination since that time.

Hi everyone, good Halloween topic here - my question is whether or not it’s safe to watch all the ghost hunting/paranormal shows on Discovery, Travel Channel, Animal Planet (why there’s a ghost show on Animal Planet is a head-scratcher), etc. I do love a good scare, but wonder whether these shows are somewhat dangerous, as in is one flirting with the demonic if one indulges in these ghostly goings-on. One show (Paranormal State) regularly features a Catholic priest, others are somewhat new-agey (John Edwards, good grief). I do worry about the poor guys on Ghost Adventures, they are so cavalier about the spirits they come in contact with (if indeed they are in touch with something and not just making it all up). Anyway, I do watch in the understanding that there is probably a lot of deception going on by the dark powers-that-be, but again a good scary ghost story is hard to pass up, and I like how they go against the “worm food” theory of death the secular world likes to promote. Maybe it’s good for the average tv watching atheist to reconsider the afterlife. 🤷
I don’t watch these shows anymore for two reasons:
  1. They are not as entertaining as they were when I was a kid. I remember when the shows would just tell you the ghost stories and let the viewer be entertained by the stories. They didn’t try to prove or disprove the stories with experts, scientific explanations, and investigations. Then some time in the nineties, the shows started including psychics and started becoming investigation oriented. That’s when they stopped being fun.
Now they all seem to follow a formula: introduce story, introduce investigation team, introduce experts for or against, continue story a little more, introduce usage of pseudo-scientific equipment, enter psychics who walk around and talk to thin air, back to experts, more story, stumble around in the dark and record for voices, evaluate info collected, experts opinions on data, end of show where nothing was proved or disproved. Boring.

Leonard Nemoy’s In Search Of and Arthur C Clarke’s series were far more entertaining then the stuff they’ve got now. Those series were investigative, but they weren’t as hokey as the stuff they produce now.
  1. There’s loads of Catholic literature specifically on this subject matter. After reading books like Father Amorth’s An Exorcist Tells His Story and Peter Kreeft’s Angel’s and Demons, you quickly find out that these shows are extremely misleading and full of misinformation. For this reason alone, I would not watch any of these shows (unless it was to point out to others what information was inaccurate or fictional).

In the show Paranormal State on A&E Father Bob Bailey is on the show almost every episode. He is a Roman Catholic priest for the Diocese of Providence, RI.
