Tonight on Larry King he has psychic kids. What does the church say about this if anything? and what does everyone here think?

Well most physics just do cold readings. There is nothing supernatural about them. I know that in cases of severe demonic possession, the demon can read the minds of those around it.

Now the million dollar question is. Would God give these children this ability as a gift? Your guess is as good as mine.

Other then that I cannot explain it.

What kind of physics were they? Could they read the thoughts of others? Or were they trying to communicate with the dead? (I sure hope they aren’t)

The Church teaching is clear:

CCC 2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

Yea I watched the same thing on Larry King last week. Crazy isn’t it. I personally believe that they could be seeing ghosts. Since I was 10 I’ve had friends and people I know who saw ghosts and they were very down to earth people.

I personally have felt ghosts and I even heard one one time (I heard a distinct loud “knock knock” on a door near the stage at my High School while in the room doing maintenance and I went to answer it like normal and no one was there at all. I looked around too. I also heard a toilet flush when me and one other person were the only ones there and we were both present. My school was supposedly haunted too. Other than being able to sense ghosts sometimes at haunted places like hair standing on end thats as far as my experiences go. I’d like to see one someday though.

The church doesn’t say anything about ghosts and acknowledges that they could exist. There is some church history regarding ghosts and Padre Pio among others. Now what they are regarding heaven, hell, and purgatory remains a mystery. I personally believe they have something to do with purgatory (remaining on earth as some kind of temporary punishment perhaps or they refused to follow the light ect or was bound to earthy possesions.) but thats just me.

I personally believe some people have the gift of some kind of higher awareness and can see them more often than others. Perhaps God uses that gift so they can deliver messages to help both living people and deceased souls when called by God to do so, who knows. I can usually tell when someone is fake and most people don’t talk about it at all even people who I’ve known who have seen them were hesitant to talk about it with me because they’d be seen as crazy.

This appears to be a gift though, not an occult practice. Now if they try and use it as a power or run a service to contact the dead thats a different story and the church forbids that.

**I think the parents and individuals responsible for this have done a grave disservice not only to their children but to God Himself. They are on the road to perdition and taking their children with them.

The Church condemns any type of meddling with spirits, such as mediumship, tarot, ouja boards, etc., as does its Sacred Scripture.

What these parents have encouraged is the opening up of their children to demonic activity and quite probably possession later on.

Now you know my opinion. **

I don’t believe this is a gift from God, and I say this because I know a psychic personally. I have also seen Ghosts on several occasions, and I have experienced other paranormal phenomena. I even have a picture with an orb covering my face.

There is a widespread belief that Ghosts need our help to “cross over.” This simply isn’t true. God has the ability to help these individuals himself; we don’t need to get involved. We can and should pray for the souls of the dead, however.

Psychics never teach that Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Most believe in New Age doctrines that are contrary to the Christian faith; even if they don’t teach anything contrary to Christianity, the vast majority do not confirm it. Any spirit who does not confirm that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God is demonic.

Do I believe in Ghosts? Yes, but I think the vast majority of Ghosts who haunt are evil beings, and perhaps even demons or devils.

Anyone with any sense would stay away from all those who claim to have psychic ability. Physics are deluded at best, and are demonically oppressed at worst. They are being lied to by the evil spirits, who are only really concerned with the damnation of the spiritualist’s soul.

" the vast majority of Ghosts who haunt are evil beings, and perhaps even demons or devils."

How can you prove that? Yes there are demonic haunts and I’ve read plenty of stories about them but I have also heard about peaceful haunts such as relatives visiting their loved ones right after they pass to bid farewell. How could that be demonic?

Even though I was born and raised in the Catholic Church and I continue to be Catholic and go to mass, that doesn’t stop me from having an open mind to anything. I tend to be very scientific, philosophical, and theological in my thought rather than literal.

There’s many things that the bible doesn’t mention and we simply do not know. To say whether something doesn’t exist or is " all demonic " really demonstrates closed mindedness. I’m not trying to criticize but to point out and discuss. It’s not just you but a lot of people on the forum tend to be. Maybe it’s a fear that questioning faith is sinful rather than a catalyst for further learning of their own faith and the Catholic Church and how it relates to the world. I do commend the strict living by the faith mentality but try to keep an open mind.

Yes you are right that a majority of psychics practice other religions but what does the church teach about respecting other religions? I’m sure it is as much as a sin to to curse and damn members of other faiths to hell or claim that they are demonic as much as it is as in to follow their faith and leave the church due to lack of faith.

That whole statement seems to have a “your either with us or against us” attitude that a lot of fundamentalist religions seem to have.
The Church teaches that is wrong and contrary to Christ. Did Christ curse the Gentiles? The Church also acknowledges that others outside the faith could be saved by God if they lived moral lives and lived as Christ would have wanted them to live if they had been in the Church. Obviously that doesn’t count towards those who left the Church but those who never were introduced to it.

As a side note there were many prophets in the bible. Prophets are basically psychics who were given a gift from God to do his will. I use the term “psychic” meaning pertaining to the mind or soul as it is defined. Not people who practice the occult, or magic or claim to know the future. Many of them tend to be deluded and you are right on that.

However there are probably plenty of psychic Christians who see dead people not because they seek and practice for power but because they were born with that ability and don’t talk about it. They aren’t “deluded”. Deluded people or crazy people who see things tend to be very random in speech, living, and everything else also known as psychosis, mania, or schizophrenia.(learned in psychology class) Many psychics I have come across tend to be the contrary and very down to earth.
.

I’ve read before that some Catholic Exorcists have psychics aiding them. Their task is to discern human spirits from inhuman ones (demons) and they help the priest decide whether someone requires an exorcism or not. These psychics of course, are not New Age but usually have strong Catholic beliefs. One of our local Catholic Exorcists (I’m in the Philippines) recently released a book on his personal experiences and he recounts how his brother gains psychic abilities which he believes came from God, to help him in his ministry.

I also read something somewhere, possibly from blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich that man had psychic abilities before the Fall. Afterwards, those abilities were closed off for most people since they were potentially a “poisoned” source and could be used by the Evil One to deceive.
