My mother has forced me into a competition. Also, apparently there is a rule that one must wear a certain garment during the opening ceremony for the competition. I find the garment to be a sin to wear, an insult to my dignity. My mother is insistent that I be in this competition and knows that I have an issue with this. What can be done?

If you feel it is a sin, don’t do it. God said to respect your mother and your father, that respect does not include doing what you find sinful because they say to.

Incidentally, what is the garment in question?

The only thing you can do is consistantly reiterate that you do not want to be in the contest or wear the garment in question. Remind her that forcing you to participate in this event is damaging her relationship with you. Suggest alternatives. That’s about all I got with such limited information.

I would suggest you talk the matter over with your confessor.

One may believe something is sinful that really is not.
