My mom is a big fan of the 50 Shades of Gray series. We’ve had conversations about it in the past, specifically regarding Church teaching on pornography and that she shouldn’t be reading it. She totally disagreed with me - and the Church for that matter - on that issue, among other things. She doesn’t believe it to be pornography, but even if she did, she says porn is okay to a certain extent.
I’m 25 years old, married and living on my own in a different state. My 15-year-old sister, however, is still under my parents’ roof. Last week, she posted a facebook photo of herself with one of the books.
I was shocked and tried having a conversation with my dad, since I’d already had the conversation with my mom about the books, which was unfortunately fruitless. He defended my sister and said she’s definitely not reading it, she’s got a good head on her shoulders, etc. I had a separate conversation with my sister afterward and explained that this is pornography, that it’s really bad, and regardless of what my parents say, it is wrong. She disagreed of course, because she knows my mom (and grandmother!) read the series therefore thinks it can’t be really pornographic (like videos or pictures, she said) or bad.
I returned to my dad, provided excerpts from the book, and iterated that it’s so important she not have access to the book. I explained I had clearly not gotten through to her since I saw she still had the photo posted on facebook. And then he got angry at me… he said I am attacking their parenting skills and making a much larger issue out of this than I should be and that at this point, I need to stay out of it.
At this point, I’m incredibly angry at my parents, incredibly sad for them and especially for my sister. I realize I can’t control anybody and one can only do so much to help others recognize and avoid sin, but I’m just wondering if at this point, I really do just need to stay out of it or if I am responsible for doing more.
Prayers are much appreciated for my entire family.
