Good Day All,

I need some advice. My friends would like to baptize their child in the Catholic Church, but I’m wondering if its allowed based on the facts below:
  1. Parents were baptized in the Catholic Church as infants.
  2. They left the Church as adults and have joined a Protestant denomination.
  3. They baptized their three other daughters in the Church, but are not raising them in our faith.
  4. They wish to do the same for a fourth daughter.
  5. Their Protestant church offers a presentation service, but the homework by the parents is overwhelming.
They’ve already contacted the Church where the grandmother attends and they have registered. The receptionist even mentioned that there was no need to attend the preparation class since its been a couple of years that they baptized their other girls.

Am I missing something here? Am I just exaggerating when I think that there is something wrong with this picture? Thank you in advance for your help…

Firstly, if they have/are going to have children baptized in the Faith, they are promising to raise them in that Faith. Do they want to come back to the Church? Why do they want them baptized Catholic?

I’m pretty sure they should be in a preparation class. It’s important that they know all the responsibilities that come with raising the child Catholic and that they understand the Sacrament. I would talk with the pastor of that parish, though. God bless.

From the situation that has been described here, it seems that the desire to have their children Baptized in the Catholic Church is based more on superstition than in a true belief in the Catholic Church.
The Parish secretary is in serious error by encouraging these parents and by not informing the Pastor of the true circumstances of this intended Baptism.
If the Pastor of the Catholic Church involved were to know of the real circumstances of the intended Baptism, he would be seriously in remiss by allowing it; especially considering that they are not practicing Catholics and are not raising their other children as Catholics. The Grandparents, knowing of this are also remiss by not informing the Pastor about this situation.

Thank you Little Hannah and George for your responses.

I am not sure why they want to baptize her. I never thought about the superstitious aspect and could be the case.

What gets me is that the dad attacks certain practices and beliefs of Catholics and is a firm believer in sola scriptura.

I’m pretty sure that the details given in my original post were not given to the receptionist and they don’t plan on telling anyone.

But, do you think that even if the parent’s are not willing to promise to raise them in our faith, wouldn’t the infant benefit more being baptized than not?
