It may be a typical way to hold a baby. But is it the only way?
Not that the editors care how that looks, considering the overall message of the cover.

What do you think the overall message of the cover is? Considering that there have been same-sex parents for quite a while now, maybe the editors of the magazine want to sell more magazines to that demographic (and there’s a lot less reason nowadays to worry about a backlash for having a cover like this). Occasionally having gay couples on their cover in addition to all the straight couples is certainly a more accurate depiction of what America looks like now.
