Prayer, Penance, and Almsgiving.
He needs help. That is Mercy. People can take counsel and correction. But in subtle ways.
If you pray, and he says something. Instead of taking offense, thus offer the other cheek. In other words, listen to him. Then ask him a question as to take counsel and correction from him. This is to dispel yourself of pride which probably ranks up into his soul as well.
Wherefore, say for example, you are praying the Rosary. He counters you. Saying something like what’s the point of prayer. You can do this at home! You can just say to the priest: Father, I enjoy praying at home. Also at work. And when I drive. You are a priest, and hold a tremendous amount of tasks and troubles in your labors. My offering of prayer is for you. And the place we are standing. Do people ask for their cars to be blest? In the same way, just praying for you and everyone. Just a thoughtful deed. But, if you do not want me to pray here. That is fine. Sorry to disturb you.
It will be a place for him to think and ponder. It’s not to put him down. Or be agitated. It’s doing more than taking offense. It’s offering the other tunic. It’s walking all the way with him. Letting his counsel and correction come to you. And handling it in a holy way. Letting him walk through that counsel and correction that he serves up. And willing to offer your tunic of letting him cover himself as you lend him your attention.
You might ask if he ever prayed the Rosary in his life? He might go on how it was something he dropped doing as it didn’t seem to work… Could be something behind his life that stained him as a priest. He may even reveal his own wounds this Lent. Be observant. Pray for him. Do everything to build this priest up in the Sacrifice in the Mass. He needs it! And of course, we all do.
