I saw in the bulletin this week a blurb about the Youth Group w/ contact information. I’m a caretaker for my Mom, so I can’t get totally involved, but I was thinking of offering to come and talk to the students about apologetics. I’m often ‘preaching’ that kids today, even those who go to Catholic schools, need to have some apologetics. Now I think I need to ‘walk the walk’, so to speak.
So, my question is, do I just contact the person in charge of the youth group, or do I call my priest first? In fact, what are the protocols for doing any kind of evangelization as a Catholic? If I wanted to start a Bible study in my home or a study group, do I ask the priest? Is it only necessary if I want to advertise in the bulletin or use parish grounds?
Second, if I do talk with the kids about apologetics, I was thinking of giving an overview–what it is, why it’s important, maybe some internet resources and then tackling one topic. The topic I was thinking of starting with is authority. I remember at that age (about 14-18) hearing “The Church says…the Church says…the Church says…” all the time and thinking, “So what? Isn’t the church just some institution? Why should I listen to them as opposed to (fill in the blank)” I didn’t understand that when we say that it’s like short hand for, “Jesus is telling you through the Church that…” or “For 2000 years the Church has been pondering this and through the Divine guidance of the Holy Spirit has come to understand that…”
Anyway, what are your thoughts?
