I was wondering if any Bostonians out there could offer some parish recommendations. I will be moving up to the South End in a few days. Some things I am looking for:
Beautiful, reverent worship
Priest facing ad orientem
Some degree of **Latin **in the liturgy
Gregorian chant, polyphony, and use of the organ
Accessible via public transportation
Still hard these days to find all of the above in one parish, but one can hope right? I would be willing to sacrifice on the ad orientem if the versus populum contained the other attributes and was highly recommended.
I am looking for a NO and TLM in the area (probably means two different parishes). I would prefer the NO not be exclusively in Latin but rather a mix of Latin and English. Thanks for your help!
I’ve only been in Boston for a year now, so my advice may be a little limited!
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross is located right in the South End of Boston, and they’ve just recently (since the closing of Holy Trinity) started offering the TLM at 11 am on Sundays in the lower church. I’m not familiar with how the typical NO Mass at the Cathedral is. Here’s a link with information about the Cathedral. The next-closest TLM parish is Mary Immaculate out in Newton, which is quite a trek if one doesn’t have a car, unfortunately.
I don’t know of a parish that meets all of your criteria, but here are a few other places you might want to check out:
In Back Bay, St Clement Eucharistic Shrine offers a very reverent Mass (with lovely music, sometimes w/ chant), as well as many hours each day for Adoration, and other services (Benediction, etc).
St. Clement’s Oblates of the Virgin Mary also staff St. Francis Chapel in the Prudential Center, which offers frequent daily Masses, Adoration, and other devotions. Both of these are easily accessible via the T’s Green Line.
