Parishes given a fresh start?

It’s going to happen. The new translations will be here within a handful of years. At that time, all the (choose your own adjective) music from groups such as OCP will no longer be valid. The new translations will not work with probably 99% of their current offerings.

Question: do you think parishes will take this opportunity to break free from the vicious OCP worship resource cycle (to give one such example)?

How can we encourage our Pastors (and music directors) to look toward more “Catholic” publishers than they may have in the past?

Some won’t make any changes, There is nothing anyone can do about it. Even our Bishop here in Charlotte is at a loss and unable to force some pastors to follow his own Liturgical Norms that he issued several years ago. Some have even taken it upon themselves to make even more liturgical changes that directly oppose the GIRM and RS, and the Bishop is unable to do anything about it.

Many pastors are using the hymnals and music resources from these publishers because of the simple fact that there are no practical alternatives. There are no seasonal/monthly missallettes which contain only “good solid Catholic” material. I’ve been looking for years, and have even asked around on these forums; I still come up empty.

I know of only 3 sources for seasonal missallettes (which is what we need). None of these sources has such things available which contain only good Catholic material. The day someone publishes them, I’ll be ready to put in my order. But until that day comes, I have to make-do with the best I can–even though I don’t like them. Many other pastors are in a similar situation.

That’s interesting, because I tried to form a publication company for liturgical resources, and I couldn’t find any customers.

Like any other business, those companies have so much in the way of resources (including advertising to reach parishes where it might be effective), have established relationships with parishes, and because of volume can offer appealing prices, it’s very difficult for a newcomer to get in the door. (Of course, you learned this the hard way, but many readers out there might not realize it.)

That is one reason why God will never call me to become a Bishop (or even a Priest most likely). If I were a Bishop and Priest in my Diocese acted like that – heads would roll.

We have a good and faithful Bishop. But human beings will be, well human beings. I do not believe that it’s not that our Bishop does not want to fix things, he is resisted or ignored by some, especially some members of Religious Orders and there is not enough diocesan priests.

I’ve been following the translation issue closely for several years now. At first I had high hopes. But over the last few of these years, I’ve become skeptical that anything will really change. For most of my life, I’ve had the good fortune to go to two parishes, one in my hometown and one where I live where the Novus Ordo Masses were really done in the spirit of continuity with the Traditional Mass. I think that there would not have been any conservative backlash if all parishes were like these two. I had never ever seen a violation of the rubrics at either one.

As circumstances in my life changed, I did not have access to these two parishes anymore. Now it seems like wherever I go to Mass, the official Mass texts are only general guidelines or broad outlines for a religious Service of some type. There seems to be as many variations on this Service as the Protestants have. To be fair, I do have access to an Extraordinary Form Mass which I attend occasionally. I would attend more except for work and family obligations. It’s so striking how free form and abstract the Ordinary Form is when compared to the Extraordinary Form. Maybe that’s why some bishops and priests are so against the Extraordinary Forn.

So do I think that the translations will usher in a period of change for Ordinary Form parishes? If they were actually implemented as intended, probably yes. But with the level of disobedience to liturgical norms at the average parish, until that paradaigm changes then probably no. I cannot for the life of me forsee some parishes even coming close to implementing the new translations. Heck, they really haven’t even implemented the old translations correctly yet. Priests just continuing to make up wording to the Mass like they do now. Just chalk it up to being pastoral. Politically correct language all over the place. What will really change except the official Missal?

My parish uses J.S. Paluch/WLP. Paluch seems pretty orthodox.
