I am curious if anyone knows of any good, orthodox parishes in the Raleigh area? I don’t mean ultra-trad or anything. Just one with and orthodox priest and no hippy music in the liturgy. The more traditional the better.

If you are in Raleigh, go to St. Joseph’s. That is about your best bet. The priest there is good. Confessions/Adoration/Mass on Wednesday nights too. No altar girls. Pretty solid. You can kneel while recieving communion though there is no altar rails.

Only thing I don’t like about that parish - while they sing traditional Catholic hymns, they sing at weird times. Sometimes at the end of the homily the priest will sing a song that relates to his homily. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen. They also have an icon blessed by Pope John Paul II there, and sometimes during the “Lord, hear our prayer” everyone will face the icon and softly call out names of loved ones whom they want to pray for.

But, if you can handle those two things, everything else is pretty solid. At least check it out.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral can be okay depending on who is celebrating. But I also just like the Church. (Though I wish they would move the tabernacle back to center.)

Stay FAR FAR away from St. Francis of Assisi. I won’t even begin to explain. Just stay away. Also stay away from the St. Michael’s (In Cary) Lifeteen Mass. Unless you want to walk out feeling upset.

Every other Raleigh parish is pretty much run of the mill. Although St. Luke’s does a “Healing Mass” every other week or once a month. The Mass is normal, but after there is laying of hands a lot of people get “slain in the spirit.”

If you don’t mind making the 45 minute drive, Sacred Heart in Dunn is very solid. There is a Traditional Latin Mass there and the Novus Ordo celebration is also very reverant. I can’t complain about anything there.

PM me if you have a question about any particular parish. I have been to a lot of them.

I will second the recommendations made by Unfinished.

I agree that St. Joseph’s is the most orthodox parish in the Raleigh area.

Silence is maintained in the church before Mass, people dress decently, and you won’t get mowed down if you genuflect when exiting the pew after Mass. Incense is used at every Mass and the altar boys all wear dress pants and dress shoes. It is not unusual to see at least a few people kneel to receive Communion.

The church building unfortunately was designed by a modern architect and really doesn’t resemble a church from the outside. The interior is ok, nice and simple. It has traditional confessionals, and confession is offered on Weds. evenings and Sat. afternoons.

St. Joseph’s is also a shrine for Our Lady of Czestochowa (the Black Madonna). That is the icon referred to by Unfinished.

Sacred Heart Cathedral is beautiful and I am looking forward to Midnight Mass there.

I haven’t been to St. Francis of Assisi, but I have heard about them.

Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes begins with a “gathering song.” Ugh. However, there is a wonderful Perpetual Adoration Chapel next to the church.

DD was married at Sacred Heart Cathedral as that was her parish at the time, simply beautiful, and the wedding ministry provided to assist was excellent, orthodox and made for a beautiful ceremony. We attended Mass there several times on visits and were very favorably impressed. they continued there for a few years, very active as catechists and volunteers, until move to Chapel Hill, and the least said about their new parish the better.
