Can there be churches with a similar name in the same Diocese or are names reserved once used? Basically for example, could two churches named St. Michael’s be in the same Diocese if they are not near each other?

There are two St. Jude Thaddeus parishes in our diocese. They are not located close together, but having two of them has caused problems before, someone being at the church on time, but the wrong church about 2 hours away!

Here in Boston there (used) to be two St. Augustine Parishes. Oddly enough, I attended one of them as a child, and my father attended the other as a child. Funny how things work out. Unfortunately, the reason I added the “used”, is because the one my father attended as child was merged, coincidentally, with St. Monica Parish. Both were around at the same time, however, at one point.

I am sure there are at least two St. Mary’s in every American Diocese. I know there are lots here in Boston.

There is an Assumption Guadalupe Church and an Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church in our city. I don’t know if it’s because they’re subordinate to different Churches within the Communion of Rome that this is possible, but maybe.

Our Diocese has: 2 Corpus Christi, 2 Our Lady of the Prairies, 5 Sacred Heart, 2 St. Agnes, 2 St. Albert, 2 St. Anthony, 2 St. Clare, 2 St. Joseph, 2 St. Mary, 2 St. Matthew, 2 St. Stephen, 2 St. Theresa

Okay, you get my point 😃 (and I probably missed some)

Of course, these are not all in the same city (it covers a fairly large geographical area). But it can be fun when you volunteer at the Archdiocese office to organize the mail-outs to the parishes for support for the seminary and you have 5 parishes with the same name
