Part time working on Sundays

Hello Cruxis117,

You remind me of a (true) story about an orthodox Jew who was chastised for doing “work” by turning on the electric hot water system on the Sabbath. God is not interested in such petty tasks associated with our daily living needs, and, as has already been intimated by others, there are some people who are required to work on Sundays - priests included.

Sorry to sound negative on this, but, do you go to church because your love of God is so strong that you would not miss being at Mass to worship Him, or because the human hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church dictates that you should? I hope it is the former.

Peter tells us that we are justified by our faith, not by our works, so we shouldn’t go to church expecting attendance itself to bring us into a closer relationship with God, though, hopefully, listening to scripture and hearing a good homily may help. James tells us that if our faith is real then works will follow as a consequence - you will want to be there because of your faith. Talk of obligations to attend anything make me doubt the focus of our intentions.

To be honest, I’m not quite sure if I can move the day. The issue is that I have work on every other day, and I made that compromise because my sister does one more day of dishes during the week than I do, because of the lawn-mowing. No, I’m the only one who can mow the lawn. Ah, okay.

Try not to be scrupulous. If that is the only time the lawn can be mowed, than that is it. If I am reading you correctly, this is a chore assigned to you by your parents, and you have a duty to obey them, unless what they ask of you is sinful, and asking you to mow the lawn is not sinful. The fact that Sunday is the only time that can be done does not make it sinful for anyone.

I enjoy mowing the lawn - quiet reflection - nobody talks to you. My lawn needs to be mowed at least twice a week. I have worked in hortucilture and lawn maintanence for years and I am a stickler for properly taking care of a lawn.
