I was wondering, of the persons here discerning a vocation, how many participate actively in their parish (prayer groups, reading at mass, processions, other activities). Those that are already leading a consacrated life please feel free to answer as well. Oh, and perhaps specify if you’re discerning to be a secular or a religious. Thanks 😉

I am an Lay Minister of Holy Communion. I just started getting involved with the Inter-generational Event at Church, that my mom is helping out in. I offered to volunteer. I also would like to join the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, but I can’t seem to persuade my dad to join. 😦 I’m going to the Ministry Fair on Jan. 31th so I can find others to join. :0

For some reason I’m not allowed to vote in polls, so here’s my two cents…

I’m discerning a vocation to the contemplative religious life. I’m not involved in anything in my parish other than attending Mass and confession. :o I feel guilty for it, but I don’t want to serve as a Eucharistic Minister at Mass or serve as a lector because I don’t want to give up my ability to pray the Mass by myself. I feel like that’s selfish, but at the same time I feel like the vocation I’m discerning matches up with that desire and perhaps that’s the best way for me to proceed. I’m more or less playing it by God’s ear, if you will.

As for getting involved outside of Mass I’ve thought about it…it just hasn’t happened yet. God willing I will find a way to do so that can fit into my ever-changing work schedule.

In Christ’s peace.

I used to what I would call a nominal Catholic, just a warm body in a pew, then God decided he had other plans for me.

Currnely I am a Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister and fill in when needed as a Lecturer and Usher at Mass. My wife and I have led or co-led Bible Studies for the past 5-6 years. I am a member of the Knights of Columbus (served as Chancelor, Deputy Grand Knight, Grand Knight, and currently a Trustee), have helped teach RCIA and trained altar servers. Have just started the Permanemt Deaconate program (first class was yesterday). I feel that I have been truly blessed. If you feel God is calling you, walk to the door. If it is where he wants you to God you will step through the door. If not, the door will close and you just have to find the door that God wants you to walk through.

I am a musician in one of our music groups. I either play the violin or sing- whichever I feel like! But I’m glad because I play music on Saturday nights, and then go with my family on Sunday mornings, and get to concentrate on the Mass more.

Oops I forgot the second part of the question…

I’m not officially “discerning” but still getting my head around the extent of each possibility. I’m leaning towards religious life though.

🙂

Praised be Jesus Christ,

I read the scriptures but not so often anymore,I also lead the stations of the cross as well.I feel as if there is more I can do ,I just need Ideas.

As the youth at our parish we have just started to collect food parcels for the poor and clothes, and pray for the sick. What more can we do (exciting stuff)?🤷 We have a bunch of very vibrant young people who have just joined the Catholic church,we need ways to teach them about the Faith as well as keep them busy.

Please feel free to suggest what your youth does in your parishes.

God Bless you all…

I’ve joined a few ministries at my parish but the one that is very crucial to me is to bring the Communion to the Nursing Home. I’ve been fed very much by this ministry.

I don’t participate in my parish at this time and it’s not because I’m a grinch or anything. I work nights (when a lot of activities are held) and also, I have to sleep later in the mornings when the weekly Bible study is going on. There are a couple of ministries I’d love to become a part of, but it’s going to have to wait till I have a different schedule.

I’m active mainly in the music ministry as part of the choir, but I also regularly attend meetings for KoC.As far as discerning goes, at this point, I’m still considering both the priesthood and religious life, but I’m leaning heavily towards the local(ish) Benedictine Abbey.

I’m an irregular altar server 😛

Does that count? 🙂
I think it does. God most likely appreciates your service when needed. There’s a gentleman who serves as altar server during the week for daily Mass. You can’t expect a student to miss school. 😊 God bless you!

Thanks 🙂

We actually only have Masses on Sundays (mornign and evening) and Wednesdays (evening) and also on Thursday afternoons ( for the elderly ).

The latter beign a Mass to which no altar server was ever assigned. I actually found out of that Mass being celebrated by coincidence and requested several times that altar servers be assigned to that Mass: after all, it’s about God in every Mass.

The argument came up that students could not serve in such a Mass starting after 2pm: However, I myself was a student at the time and actually then served in those Masses every week (when I was still a regular server and a student whose schedules permitted me to serve).
Until this day, no altar servers are assigned… Due to my work now, I cannot go.

I just go to Mass. I’m not a fan of community stuff.
I can understand you, Bataar-I’m not much into the ‘community stuff’, either.

I used to read at Mass and sing (both in choirs and as a cantor). I belonged a prayer group (that disbanded). I was two Third Orders (Franciscan, then Discalced Carmelite)-left one, was ‘charitably dismissed’ from the other. I volunteered a couple years in the [former] parish picnic-came home feeling (and smelling) I’d been in a bar.

I don’t do those things anymore. I only go to Perpetual Adoration and the Latin Mass. I attend Mass at a chapel where the priests come from outside the area. There is no ‘parish life’ strictly speaking, since the chapel is only open for Mass. I did go to a picnic that it sponsored last year, though.

But I’m not the ‘social-worker’ ‘gung-ho leader’ type. The more hidden I am, the better off I’ll be. I’ve been ‘burned’ too many times by the ego/power trips/control freaks in groups.

I was super-involved in my parish before I entered, and was blessed to be able to live at my home parish and be super-involved a few years after I entered the convent (I’ve been back at my home parish in 1999-2000 and from 2001-present). There are always many “behind-the-scenes” types of things that need workers in the parish; it is also good to be involved with the people.

God bless!
