Good morning everyone,

I am trying to find a Douay-Rheims Bible to purchase, but I am a tad confused by all the different versions, Challoner revisions, etc… Is there a particular edition or publisher that is the best, or “traditional” copy?

I have editions of the RSV-CE (Ignatius), NAB, JB, and NJB-- they’re all great but I’d love to add the DR to my collection for study purposes.

Thanks!

I have never actually seen anything other than the Challoner version in print. Usually, when people refer to the DRV in common parlance, they are referring to this version. Bishop Challoner’s footnotes are not as copious as some study Bibles, but they are solid.

Here are two options for a printed version of the original, pre-Challoner Douay-Rheims Bible:

churchlatin.com/DouayRheims.aspx Download the sample pages for a sense of how difficult 16th-century spelling can be to read.

realdouayrheims.com/ This work is also the original translation, but has had the spelling modernized.

Then there is the Haydock Bible, basically a Challoner version with changes from Dr. Troy’s late 18th-century revision, and the addition of very copious notes. Best price I’ve seen for a new Haydock bible is at this link.

Welcome to CAF TXCatholic! 🙂

I have the one published by Baronius Press. It is very good. I also would like to have a copy of the Haydock. I hope you find the Douay-Rheims worth while

I got mine from TAN Books. They specialize in publishing old Catholic books: tanbooks.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage/product_id/616/
