Particular Theology of the Church of Christ

I have a friend who is looking into Catholicism. I loaned him a copy of *Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth *and as he gave it back to me he remarked that he thought it was interesting that Catholicism and Church of Christ (of which he is a member) was the similarity in many of their beliefs, especially the claim to be the original church founded by Christ.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good resource which discusses the other particular beliefs of the Church of Christ so that I can continue this dialogue? He seems quite receptive to truth, but it is always easier to take the elements of truth as found in other religions and connect them to the fullness of truth.

And there are others denominations/brotherhoods that go by Church of Christ - which particular group is the OP referencing?

That’s right.

There’s the United Church of Christ, which was formed when the Congregational Church merged with some other denomination.

There’s also the Church of Christ, Scientist–commonly known as Christian Scientists.

Then you have that whole other family of independant churches called Church of Christ, which go back to the Campbells. Some believe in music, some don’t, some have Sunday School, so believe tha’ts unscriptural. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) came out of this movement.

Ask him about the Real Presence. He’ll tell you the bread and the “fruit of the vine” (otherwise known as Grape Juice) are just representations of Christ. You see when Christ gave the whole “Bread of Life” Discourse he was talking figuratively. Evidently, when Christ says, “Truly, Truly, I say to you…”, he’s not to be taken literally.

They do NOT believe in infant baptism.

They do not believe that the gates of Heaven are open, yet. They are waiting for the second coming of Christ to lead all souls into heaven.

They believe that our Church went into Apostasy sometime around the time of Constantine, and they went underground. Althought there is NO PROOF of this, it is the Gospel to these people.

Also, evidently their classes on Sunday School includes teaching their congregation just how wrong the Catholic Church is.

Actually, we have an active COC Minister on this Forum.

He will be glad to answer any questions regarding their beliefs. (They do not really use the words Theology or Creed. Oh well.)
