Are there any parts of the Mass that would be proper to the bishop over a priest if both are assisting at Mass?

Conversely, are there any parts of the Mass that would be proper to a priest over the bishop if both are assisting?

And for completeness, what are the parts of the Mass proper to the deacon over the priest and the bishop, if all three are assisting?

If the deacon is assisting, what is proper to him is the proclamation of the Gospel and the invitation to the faithful to exchange the sign of peace. In most cases, the General Intercessions are also proper to the deacon. The deacon would also be the one who would hold the chalice during the Doxology (watch a Papal Mass; you will see a deacon assisting the Holy Father).

The bishop would probably be the main celebrant even if there is a priest with him. Although, as many of us saw in Senator Kennedy’s funeral, even though Cardinal O’Malley was there, he was in choir dress and not acting as the celebrant.

When a bishop celebrates the Mass, his greeting to the faithful is different from the priest’s. Whereas a priest would begin the Mass (after the sign of the cross) with one of three options, when a biishop celebrates the Holy Sacrifice, he begins with “Peace, be with you.”

The priest, when concelebrating with the bishop, would say some part of the Memorial of the Eucharistic Prayer, but, the bishop would say the words of the Institution Narrative of the Consecration.

Note that if a deacon is present, he *always *proclaims the Gospel. Whether there be a bishop, priest, or even pope, the deacon proclaims the Gospel.

Also the deacon also prepares the chalice by pouring in the water and the wine. He also does the penitential rite, the form with the 3 tropes and Kyrie. (Lord Jesus, you came to call sinners, Lord have mercy…) The priest will do the introduction and conclusion to this.

The deacon also says the conclusion (The Mass in ended…) after the blessing by the priest.
