Passage that says "Leave him to Satan for a while"

Isn’t there a passage that instructs the faithful to leave certain sinners over to Satan for a time so that the person repent and return to the faith?

If so, wouldn’t this help us understand the instruction not to pray for certain sin in 1 John 5:16 There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray.
 
Is this what you have in mind?

1 Timothy 1:18-20 (NAB) - I entrust this charge to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophetic words once spoken about you. Through them may you fight a good fight by having faith and a good conscience. Some, by rejecting conscience, have made a shipwreck of their faith, among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Or perhaps this?

1 Corinthians 5:3-5 (NAB) - I, for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as if present, pronounced judgment on the one who has committed this deed, in the name of (our) Lord Jesus: when you have gathered together and I am with you in spirit with the power of the Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

I suppose the two concepts link together in some sense, but I wouldn’t put too fine a point on it. Notice that in the passage you quoted from 1 John 5:18, St. John merely suggests that we shouldn’t pray for such people, not that we mustn’t pray for them.

However, if we’re to follow his advice, I suppose that is, in effect, a turning-over of such a person to the influence of Satan.
