Hi. What is your opinion on the what age I could show the movie The Passion of The Christ to kids? I have a 15 yr old and an 11 yr. old. Thanks.

It is fine. It is a factual event and it is about our God who incarnated. I have never understood why so much fuss over this movie? Yet so many are against the Passion and yet their kids watch other filth?

There are very graphic scenes in this film. I would allow teenagers to view it with parental guidance. I probably wouldn’t show it to an 11 year old. However, some kids are more mature for their age. Use your judgement to decide whether your youngest is old enough.

Probably because it’s graphic and could upset them or give them nightmares? Of course it’s a good movie for many adults, but I would never show it to a sensitive child. Not everyone is OK seeing such things.

The 15 yr old may be fine, especially if they don’t express any concern themselves. 11 is very young to show it to them, especially if the kid is sensitive. 14 or 15 is about the youngest I would show it. I certainly wasn’t ready to see it before that.

You know your kids best, so it’s ultimately your decision. Just be aware that the violence is extremely intense, and could certainly upset or frighten a young or sensitive viewer.

Agree. Also view the movie with them, to be there for questions & explanations.

Definitely not for an 11 year old. It’s a great portrayal of the passion, but an 11 year old is too young to have such a graphic portrayal of violence shown to them. Personally I wouldn’t show it to a 15 year old either.

It is a very powerful and moving portrayal of the Passion, but it isn’t suitable for children.

I completely agree with Brendan.

Me, too. You might consider letting the 15 year old watch it if he/she is mature enough to handle what they will see. Have you seen the movie? If so, you should be able to judge for the older child. If not, you need to watch it before letting your children watch.

Peace

Tim

That’s what I was thinking.

It is an extremely violent portrayal which doesn’t hold back (I found the scourging particularly shocking) I’m surprised that anyone who has seen it would even consider letting someone as young as 11 watch it.

Thank you so much for all your comments. I’ll wait a bit before showing it to the 11 year old and probably show some parts to the older one.

No. It was too graphic for me, it probably is still too graphic for me.
I would say wait until they can legally drive first.

I’m 52, and I haven’t tried watching it yet, because I’d heard how graphic/violent some of the scenes were. :o (In high school, I was the one who stayed at home and read a book when my friends went to see things like “Dawn of the Dead.” 🤷)

Lately, though, I’ve been wanting to borrow it. I can always have a craft project at hand, so I can avert my eyes briefly if it gets to be too much for me.

Watch it, it’s amazing. It is the most moving film I have ever seen, a great portrayal of the Passion. It is not comfortable viewing by any means, and is very upsetting and disturbing in parts, but isn’t that what the Passion is meant to do to us anyway. In my opinion, Mel Gibson got it just right. A VERY Catholic movie.

I’m 15 now, and I watched it in religion class when I was 13. I would definitely say someone who’s 15 can watch this- personally I hate blood and I remember certain parts were tough to watch, but i just looked away during the gory scenes. Honestly watching it inspired me so much so I think it would be good to show it to your kids, or at least the 15 year old if you think your younger child would be upset by it.

I think it depends on the child; some are more sensitive than others. But I would say maybe 15 or 16 years old as an approximate minimum age. As I am sure you know, the movie is very violent and graphic – but it is an excellent movie.

I agree with the poster who said they wondered what all the fuss was about.
Personally, the part that I found the hardest to take was Peter’s third denial.
It’s a no holds barred account of what happened.
I wish the whole world were offended by what Jesus went through for our salvation.

Anything difficult to work through must be done with you at your children’s side.
Presumably they have heard of the Passion before now. Turn on the TV and see similar or far worse. But those are just nameless people. 🤷 Society accepts it because “these people don’t really exist.” Crazy.
We’re talking about our Savior here.

How is it that people expect children to compartmentalize gratuitous violence when it’s in regard to “entertainment”, but films about our faith are somehow to be censored?
I don’t get it.

you know your kids best. If the younger one is quite sensitive, fair enough. don’t let him watch it. but don’t’ hold back with the 15 yr. old. He’s probably already been hit with all kinds of conflicting theological ideas from his peers and the world.

God bless you for desiring the truth for your children/
Peace.

15 : no problem
11 : no way

Even assuming it represents what happened to Jesus 100% accurately ( which is probably not too far from the truth), that in no way means a young child is mentally capable with dealing with that detailed level of portrayal.

I can barely watch it, and I am a 50-something old man who is not the least bit squeamish.

Agree.

I think it really depends on the temperment of the child. How sensitive they are to violence and brutality

It is EXTREMELY GRAPHIC AND BRUTAL

What I would advise is that you watch it first. You know your kids best.

I was in my 40’s when I watched it, and I could only take parts of it a few minuets at a time, and yes, I was traumatized by what I saw.
