Passover Seder

Passover is not on the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar.

Not that I’ve ever heard of. Christ is our sacrificial Lamb. The Passover lamb of the Old Testament commemorated the passover in Egypt (when the blood of lambs wiped on the Israelite’s doors saved their firstborn from the angel of death). Passover was also a shadow, or symbol of what was to come – Christ’s (the Lamb’s) death on the cross. His death ushered in the New Covenant, the Passover was part of the Old Covenant.

Catholic Christians do not celebrate Passover as it is a Jewish Holiday celebrating the exodus from Egypt. However, many Catholic schools and Catholic youth groups will celebrate a Passover Seder as a lesson of our history. Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the last supper which was a Seder celebrating the Passover. Just like we teach our youth about Moses and Abraham, the Passover is part of our spiritual heritage also.

Because I know that Passover isn’t on the Catholic liturgical calendar, but didn’t know if it was on another Christians church’s.

The local United Methodist church had a seder one year with the teenagers. It was part of their Sunday school. It was to teach them about the history, and it wasn’t a holiday on the Church calendar. The younger kids and the adults didn’t have a seder.

We have them in my family but I don’t go. My stepfather is a Messianic Jew and they love to do all the religious celebrations and I think that’s just fine but it’s hard enough for me
being a troubled Catholic so I don’t need more religion.

OTOH, a free dinner is a free dinner so I guess it would work for some folks.

A Jew who came through our RCIA program a few years back conducts a Seder for us each year with the help of the Knights of Columbus.

Incidentally, I read a bit on a Jewish site re the Fifth Question. As you may know, a part of the Seder meal is when the youngest son asks the Four Questions. However, he then asks a fifth question that is not in the script - “Are we almost done?”
