He is telling the truth? From personal knowlege? Do you know someone who believes in reincarnation and also says people don’t deserve mercy? What has mercy got to do with reincarnation?

Who are ‘they’ that he is talking about? This is not slander? Has he met and talked to ‘them’? Have you met these people who consider that someone does not deserve mercy?

So only people who do not believe in reincarnation do charity work? This is not lies? Is this the way to explain someone’s belief system, by ascribing false motives onto them?

So you are saying making false statements about a large number of people is not a mortal sin? So it is just a minor sin according to the Church? Or it not a sin at all - just some casual, friendly accusations? Or do you yourself actually believe it is true that people who believe in reincarnation don’t believe in mercy? That people who believe in eternal damnation are far more merciful (or are the only merciful ones)? That people who believe in eternal damnation are the only ones who do ‘charity works’?
No. 😦 I do know someone who strongly believes in reincarnation and He does know God is merciful. In some way this reincarnation idea involves that mercy but, honestly, I don’t want to get into a full blown discussion of this with him because why put myself in front of an oncoming train? Yes, I have met people who think Humans do not deserve mercy. Remember, “there are things in heaven and earth, Horatio…” There are people whose life experiences have led them to conclusions that, although from our viewpoint and that of our faith, are very incorrect (and even sinful),are reactions to those experiences. Re: charity work, it appears the OP is telling everyone not to do charity work since it counts for nothing, according to his faith system (or the faith system he is arguing for or attempting to explain). Personally, I wonder about altruism. It seems to me that almost all charitable works serve those who do them in some way, right? Serving God with an act of charity is requesting (in some way) God’s attention and approbation and it makes the charitable person “feel” good about him/her self.

I am not saying “making false statements about large numbers of people is not a mortal sin”, as you state. Perhaps to the OP these are not false statements, perhaps these are his truths. Or perhaps he is playing devil’s advocate (literally). It is a matter of will: is he willingly and knowingly defaming others or is he simply making an argument (no matter how poorly made)? Can either of us judge in this venue? I don’t think so. Not yet. Not unless there are next blatant accusations et al which would make us question his sanity. I don’t see that happening.

Or do you yourself actually believe it is true that people who believe in reincarnation don’t believe in mercy? That people who believe in eternal damnation are far more merciful (or are the only merciful ones)? That people who believe in eternal damnation are the only ones who do 'charity works

I’ve just said that I know someone who believes in reincarnation who does believe in mercy and I’m sure there must be others, he can’t be the only one among 6 billion people on earth (and, btw, he’s a Roman Catholic). So I conjecture that there are those who believe in reincarnation who do NOT believe in mercy. When there is a thesis, there is always an antithesis. As for believing in eternal damnation, does that make someone merciful? I think not. I’ve heard some people in my lifetime, people I considered “bad” (outside the will of God, deliberately) say they were going “to hell” with no apparent fear or negative reaction. OK maybe they really didn’t believe in “hell”, but I have heard this on more than a few occasions (one of them being just the other day!) And there are many secular people doing charity work, some of whom don’t even believe in God. e.g., without naming anyone in particular, an extremely rich computer entrepreneur who never speaks about faith or God but who does an enormous amount of charity work. More: a famous celebrity couple who have had children out of wedlock, who are quite wealthy and do enormous amounts of charity work (including going to places we would prefer not to see in order to help people in person). Now, living contrary to the word of God and His commandments by “living in sin” - yet still doing charity work that many/most would prefer not to do - what does God make of that and who are we to make a decision on His behalf?

I say: never throw the first stone. We are in no position to tell anyone to run to confession this very minute and pray a bus doesn’t hit us on the way. That’s my two cents. 🤷

My answer is simple, Jesus died for all sin, a timeless sacrifice for all (male and female) ONE SACRIFICE ONE DEATH!
This is what I would say and I quote
“Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

No. :…Perhaps to the OP these are not false statements, perhaps these are his truths. … That’s my two cents. 🤷
Whew! That was along post! Just to make it clear - Mr. Joseph is not OP (OP stands for the person who started the thread).

Making a blanket statement that people who believe in reincarnation also do not believe in mercy for suffering people or that they do not do ‘charity works’ is clearly a false statement by any reasonable standards.

I am sure you meant well by your two cents - peace!

But let us address the issue of mercy or compassion between the two belief systems with a simple example. (Hopefully some clever person does not call the example a strawman or red herring - a pretty standard tactic on this forum):

Suppose a juvenile (say 15 years old) commits a heinous crime like rape or even murder and then gets hit by a bus and drops dead - so no chance of repentance or absolution by the Church. Considering his age, in Europe he would not have qualified for even a life sentence. Even in some place harsh like Texas, he would be able to get paroled eventually.
  • According to the Catholic Church he has ‘chosen’ eternal hell by his actions and that is most likely where he will end up for eternity (The case where he repents, is equally absurd/disproportionate - he just spends some time in purgatory and then enters heaven for eternity to join the saints).
  • According to believers in reincarnation, he will spend some time in hell to pay for his actions and then come back to earth to try and lead a better more righteous life. His soul remembers all the past lives (and all past relations and actions) and will do its best to improve at each life. After many, many lifetimes he will eventually become pure enough to enter heaven for eternity (In between lifetimes he will spend limited time in hell, heaven or someplace like purgatory in exact proportion to his actions/state of being from the previous life).
You can judge for yourself which belief system is more just, more merciful (gives plenty of second chances) and more compassionate.

If he is already paid for his action in hell, then why he again send to try for a better life, If he is purified from sins, why he cannot admitted into heaven?.

Brother can you please tell me what are the faults that your soul remembers about your past life and what deeds you done so far in this life to improve your life from past life.?. If you cannot remember your faults in past life and so far you did not done anything to improve your life based on past life awareness , then do you consider this life is waste or may resulted in adding some more sins in your souls account.

As per christian faith ,there is no second chance. One and Only chance. So maximum good deeds in this life. Lead a good life and abstain from Evil.

Mr Joseph, I will take the risk of you going on a tangent (about Dalits or cows or something) and respond to your post. Please stick to the topic which is reincarnation.

If you believe that spending time in hell or purgatory makes you as pure as Mother Teresa or Pope John Paul, then good luck to you. I don’t think so - you should actually lead a earthly life like Mother Teresa or John Paul before you can claim to have the same right to enter heaven for eternity like they have.

What the soul remembers and what your brain remembers are two different things. Your brain is not your soul. The memory of the brain is a physical set of neurons only formed in the present life - it only remembers this life. Your soul remembers all your all lives, all your actions and will try to guide in your mortal life. If your soul can not guide you at all and you are only guided by the demands of your brain - mainly your physical/material needs, then you are in trouble - you may indeed add more sins.

In the christian faith there is 'only one chance; - that is the problem. It does not consider those who die young, those who die unbaptized, those you have not much opportunities in their life (because of financial circumstances, lack of education etc), no second chance for sudden deaths, no consideration at all for juvenile criminals - on the whole a totally unjust, inequitable belief system. A nasty person who has never done anything in his life for anyone can repent just before death and then (after a stint in purgatory) spend eternity rubbing shoulders with the saints - this is not mercy, this is injustice/inequity.

I am not sure where you got the idea that there is no hell in Hinduism or there is no hell according to people who believe in reincarnation. There is definitely a concept of hell, except that it is not eternal. The sinner after spending the appropriate amount of time in hell as punishment, is reborn to try and lead a better life next time around. Eventually after many lifetimes, if he learns to be a good person and becomes pure enough (almost saintly), he will be allowed into heaven for eternity.

According to the Catholic Church, on the other hand, the person who tried to assassinate Pope John Paul, since he has repented (he actually met and talked with the Pope), may now be destined for eternal heaven (after purgatory) to sit next to the Pope grinning possibly from ear to ear (however there is some small question about there being a body or ears in heaven).
You are all wrong, there is a hell and heaven and we are all sinner Pope or not.
Jesus died as a sacrifice for that sin so if you receive in your heart what he did on the cross then you go to heaven “by Grace you are save not by works less any one can boast “. It was by the blood sacrifice of an innocent man who had no sin being the son of God in other words God came down to earth in a human body (the son of God) and gave man a chose life or death

Mr Joseph, I will take the risk of you going on a tangent (about Dalits or cows or something) and respond to your post. Please stick to the topic which is reincarnation…
You believe that they got bad life and sufferings in this life due to their sins in the past and at the same time , you tells that talking about that is not relevant to the topic of reincarnation. Why?.

They are not just spending time in purgatory. They are purifying there. They are paying for their sins. When all impurities from a soul is gone , what is the problem which stops them to going to heaven or unifying with God.?.

So with your conscious mind you cannot remember your past deeds. If your soul got a second chance and your soul remembers faults of the past, definitely you are leading a saintly life in this world .Or your soul is repenting for that particular past faults only and doing new faults in this life?. Then this world should be full of saints , as everybody’s soul remembers past faults and now leading a good life.

God is deciding the length of one’s life. If a person does not done any faults in this life, he will not send to hell. That is sure. God will purify him from his Original sin through his mercy and will admit him to heaven. We don’t know when our death comes, so be ready all time. Be a good person through out your life.

So as per your opinion one should know his death time in advance , for repenting. It may be suitable for your logic, so that a person can willfully do a mistake and then repent before his death and go to heaven.

I dont know your logic, that after purifying from sins in purgatory, still you consider that soul is binding from that sin?. Then what is the purpose of sending him there?. He is allowed to rub the shoulders with saints, if he is purified from his sins. It may injustice , if saints and sinners are given equal time in purgatory . But here everybody spends time in purgatory based on their seriousness of the sins

There is no place call purgatory or a time of purifying Jesus purified us through his blood, he makes us as “whiter than the snow “ I might not act good all the time but when I sin I ash God for forgiveness and instead of the sin God see his the Son (Jesus) sacrifice

Hindus believes that taking bath in River Ganga makes them purify from their sins and help them to attain salvation. If a body is cremated in the banks of Ganga and ashes were immersed in Ganga it is believed that they will get salvation.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganges

As you already said that you cannot believe that a soul can be purified while spending some time in purgatory and it is not justice, what is your opinion about this faith?. Do you believe in this?. Or only those persons who lead a saintly life only gets salvation and this is not correct?. Do you think it is justice?.

The term purgatory is not directly mentioned in bible , same like the word holy trinity. But if we read bible we can understand that purgatory exists.

“I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny.” Luke 12:59

We christians believe that going hell is for ever. But Jesus says that a person will not come out until he pays last penny for his sins. It is sure that , that soul is not in heaven and not in hell. But in another place , a place for temporary punishment. A soul is not ask to pay for his sin in heaven as only pure souls enter heaven and A soul in hell , cannot pay for sin as his punishment is for ever and nobody can free him from hell. Then it should be a temporary place for punishment. We call it as purgatory.

" Then if someone builds with gold upon this foundation, another with silver and precious stones, or with wood, bamboo or straw, the work of each one will be shown for what it is. The day of Judgment will reveal it, because the fire will make everything known. The fire will test the work of everyone. If your work withstands the fire, you will be rewarded; but if your work becomes ashes, you will pay for it. You will be saved, but it will be as if passing through fire." 1 Corithians 3: 12- 15

Purgatory is the place where impurities (sins) where burned to ashes through fire and a soul is saved as if passing through fire. Early christian communities believed that it is in this place (purgatory) where a soul is tested through fire and impurities are burned from him. Which makes him eligible to go to heaven.

"Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free the soul that Hades has once received. Wisdom 16:13-14

It is clearly stated that god bring down a soul to the gates of hell and brings him back. It is also clearly mentioned that once a soul is put into hell nobody can free him. That means God sends those souls for their purification (near to hell, but not in hell) and brings them back after their purification. Those dies with mortal sin is put to hell, nobody can save him.

Omnipotence does not means violation of divine justice… That is Gods justice…
But if its gods justice then he has control over that justice, or is God ruled by some outside law or idea? Why couldn’t god bring people out of hell if he wanted it. You believe he has done this already with the OT prophets.

God is not controlled by outside law. He made that law. He wants everybody to follow that law. No good ruler will make a law for violating it. He will not bring people from hell because he wants his creations to be pure.If he does so , then nobody will live a good life as there is no difference between Good and Bad. He want to make earth an image of heaven through humans.

Thinks for your opinion on this but what I know in the bible about their words accuser, adversary, serpent and deceiver there all representations of the devil or evil spirits in Luke 12”58 it uses the accuser, another bible quote is “the accuser of the brethren” from this text in Luke 12:57 "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Luk 12:58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. This is a heart issue for example forgiveness if you don’t forgive you will pay, I have experience this myself with un-forgiveness toward my mother and I paid until I gave up my judgements towards her this is where a Christian go when they don’t forgive you open door to the adversary, a prison of your own making Heb 12;15 “springs up and causes trouble,” the cross covers all sin when you bring it to God
mat_26:28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus said on the cross” it is finish”
Mat 6:14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
Mat 6:15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive
your trespasses.

Heb 12:15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

1 Corithians 3: 12- 15 Which you quote from is the end time and is a time when a Christian receive his reward for the good he done when he was on earth if you done your deed before men or for self this is the wood, bamboo or straw but if you done it for God and in secret then it gold silver and precious stones

In Luke chapter 12, mentions about the requirement for being prepared for our end time (death). Through that story jesus teaches us that .we should be always ready to meet God , the Judge. If we are not ready and continuing in our sinful life without repentance, in an unexpected time , we will put before judge and he will put us in jail (ie purgatory) and we cannot come out until we have paid the verylast penny ( ie completly purified from sins).
1 Corithians 3: 12- 15 Which you quote from is the end time and is a time when a Christian receive his reward for the good he done when he was on earth if you done your deed before men or for self this is the wood, bamboo or straw but if you done it for God and in secret then it gold silver and precious stones
Here apostle mentions that on judgement day everybody will be judged through fire. Impurities (ie sins) will be burned to ashes and for virtues , one will be rewarded.

“You will be saved, but it will be as if passing through fire.” 1 Corinthians 3:15

Only those who withstands fire will be saved through fire. We believe that the place where this purification through fire occurs is Purgatory.

Only purified souls (without stains of sins) will enter into heaven

Bible mentions about praying for dead and offering sacrifices for dead, which will help purification of dead and for releasing them from their sins. Prayer is for those who are in purgatory ( ie, for those souls which are not in heaven and hell)

"For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead, whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, the thought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might be released from their sin.… 2 Maccabees 12: 44-45

“That is why it says: He went up to the heights, took captives, he gave gifts to humanity. When it says, ‘he went up’, it must mean that he had gone down to the deepest levels of the earth. The one who went down is none other than the one who went up above all the heavens to fill all things.” Ephesians 4: 8-10.

“And this was why the gospel was brought to the dead as well, so that, though in their bodies they had undergone the judgement that faces all humanity, in their spirit they might enjoy the life of God.” 1 Peter 4:6

“Christ himself died once and for all for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life, and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison. They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah’s time when the ark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water.” 1 Peter 3:18-20

These verses will point towards a place which is not hell ( from where nobody can be saved) , but another place , but not heaven (where everybody are saved).

46 It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.

But then why not simply have a purgatory where people improve themselves untill they are saints worthy of entry into heaven? If we are all made in gods image then all men must be inherently good and never beyond reconciliation.

"If you see your brother committing sin, a sin which does not lead to death, pray for him, and God will give life to your brother. I speak, of course, of the sin which does not lead to death. There is also a sin that leads to death; I do not speak of praying about this.Every kind of wrongdoing is sin, but not all sin leads to death. (1 John 5:16-17)

It is clear in this verse about the difference between mortal sin and venial sin.

He made us in his image. He also gifted us with free will. He does not created us as a machine (for doing one thing only), He needs us to do good deeds from our free will. He is the only animal that can do Good deeds from their full conscience or Can do sins from their full conscience.

So human beings are able to do all types of Good and Bad deeds. Because we have freedom.
