Pastor resigns, citing stress, porn use
BY JILL COWAN Californian staff writer jcowan@bakersfield.com

Citing stress and issues with pornography, a longtime pastor of a major northwest Bakersfield church stepped down, by some accounts abruptly, earlier this year.

In a brief interview, Champness said he had been under stress and was dealing with loneliness and insecurity. He said as a way of coping,** he found he was prioritizing his ministry over his family and had been looking at pornography on the Internet. **Those issues factored into his decision to resign from a three-decade tenure as a pastor at the church.

“Just to continually strengthen my family and in my own walk with the Lord, it was beneficial to step out of ministry to address how I deal with pressures,” Champness, 58, said Thursday. “I’ve done (pastoral work) passionately for 30 years. I have time right now to focus on my family, kids and marriage, kind of being outside that realm.”

Like everyone else, being human, even Megachurch pastors are fallible?

Looks like the pastor is conflicted between his ministry and his family…“he found he was prioritizing his ministry over his family”…a case for celibacy?

I just have to say, what a man. He could have stayed busy with the church and be reasonably justified in his mind and the minds of others, but he realized and put his family first.

Btw, another example showing the value in priestly celibacy.

According to the article, he explained to his congregation that he hadn’t viewed anything illegal nor had he engaged in any adultery.

I think he is to be commended for realizing that the situation was too much for him, and that both he and his family were suffering as a result. It takes a lot of courage to voluntarily step down from a high-profile leadership position simply to live a quiet life.

nor had he engaged in any adultery.
He’s mistaken there. Pornography is adultery (if you’re married).

Matthew 5:28
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Anyway, hats off to him for being honest and doing what he’s gotta do.

Where are those opposing celibacy stating it is not natural? What excuse do they have for those who are married?

I don’t think they’re here.

It’s a delecate balance between family and God’s work (if there’s a difference) sometimes. Woe to him who can figure it out.

I don’t think arm chair judgments are helping this man or his family. Prayers are needed.

So, let us pray. . . . .

Peace,
Anna

This I agree…celebate living does not necessarily remove nor prevent sexual misconduct than married living does…something which has been very much in the forefront these last decades.

Not really. Pornography has been an issue and it is an issue with some Catholic priests too.

It’s a problem, no doubt. This kind of story in the press should help underscore our need not to look at this ****. Don’t look at this stuff. It’s bad for you.

If we lived in a better world, we’d have an x-ranking for such sites, making them a bit less likely to appear to children.

While I pray for this pastor, I wonder what type of penance would he will be doing? I mean I would assume hes heartily sorry for this sins for having offended God so how do megachurch pastors go about it?

I’m curious what you mean by “megachurch”? Is that his denomination or is that just a name for any large church?
