My pastor has quite a thick Colombian accent, so I’m not sure if I misunderstood him. But a few Sundays ago, he was talking about people who complain about their lives and he said something like “when people are constantly complaining, and bitching, and whining. . .” Again, he has a thick accent, so maybe I just misunderstood him. But if he really did cuss during Mass, then I am appalled. Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Bitching is the word that you’re referring to as swearing?

It is crude language, but, is not swearing.

Crude language in a homily is used to drive home a point.

What is considered swearing then? And isn’t it inappropriate for a priest to use “crude” language during the holy mass. What about the children there who are hearing it?

It is sinful to use God’s name in vain. Vulgarities or crude phrases that inculde the name of God or Jesus or Mary are sinful.

It’s possible that since he is from another country, he may not understand that many people consider that a cuss word.

I agree that it is not swearing, but is crude language and inappropriate. If I don’t want to hear my grandchildren use it, I don’t use it. There are more appropriate ways to drive a point home.

So is saying the “F” word not sinful or considered swearing?
I don’t know that it is sinful or considered swearing but, we are admonished in scripture to allow nothing unwholesome to come from our lips but only that which builds up and imparts grace. So with that, I suppose if we use that type of language, it is sin. Living the life is tough! And again, I come away from this forum having learned something.

Technically, that is a vulgarity. Some people lump all curses, profanity, vulgar or crude words together and call them “swearing”. Not sure where the application of the term swearing to profanity came from.

Swearing is not a sinful thing, unless one violates the Scriptural commandement about swearing things you have no authroity over or swearing a falsehood.

Look at the word’s meaning to determine whether it is actually sinful. I believe that that particular word is(and is disgusting anyway).

I don’t wanna be a hypocrite and act like I’m totally against cussing. When I’m hanging out with the guys, I have quite the potty mouth. That’s just how me and my friends are when we’re hanging out. Of course, when I’m with adults or when other people are around, I completely refrain from saying the more crude words like the s and f word out of respect for my elders and my parents. The only word that I’m really offended by, and will never say, is definitely GD or taking the Lord’s name in vain. The bible is very clear about that. So the word bitching doesn’t offend me. But it was the fact that he said it during his homily that irked me a bit.

Yep, that makes sense. When the phrase “that s****!” is used, it is the same thing…the word’s meaning determines it’s wholesomeness.

IMHO there are some things one does not do in front of old ladies and small children. Using language like that is one. I think it also shows a serious lack of vocabulary.
