I have never considered the word bitching to be swearing or even vulgar. I always thought it was more specific than complaining, because complaining can be completely justified. Bitching usually isn’t.

Now calling someone a B**** is a totally different matter.

Bitching isn’t universally considered vulgar so it is possible he didn’t realize that some people might be offended. It is very easy to make mistakes when you aren’t speaking in your native tongue.
It is like you can say “coger” to mean “to catch” in Spain but in some Latin American countries the word carries an exclusively sexual connotation and is the equivalent of saying f****. Sometimes words just come out on accident.

I never considered it vulgar either. It’s not even censored here at CAF. Perhaps he didn’t realize some considered it vulgar.

“Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear.” (Eph. 4:29)

“But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth.” (Col. 3:8)

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer every one.” (Col. 4:6)

“And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell. … From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so.” (James 3:6, 10)

You should avoid using vulgar language. Even when you’re out “with the boys”.

I can see where the word could be somewhat problematic during a homily.

Just had another thought…

“Bitching” vs. "Bitchin’ " in it’s contemporary meaning.

The disciples were bitching about not catching any fish. Then when they pulled in their nets, they were full. “Bitchin’ catch!” said Andrew. 😉
