Pastoral year, for a seminarian. What does that mean?

Can anyone tell me what it means to be given a “Pastoral year” when one is a seminarian?

I know it is an interruption of studies, of sorts and an assignment to a parish. Is it some sort of probation? I am curious to know what to pray for in such a situation.

It is more of an internship before ordination.

Sort of letting the seminarian see what the job is like and allowing his formators to see him in a quasi-ministerial role.

It also gives the seminarian some practical application of what he is learning. Allowing him to do some theological reflection. I know the theologate (a theologate is like a seminary only it is for the preparation of religious clergy rather than secular clergy) I am attending has a couple of theological reflection classes where we must write up papers that apply what we are learning to a ministeral/pastoral issue.

Thank you, and, God bless you on your journey. My son is considering Eastern rite.
