Does the Bishop of a local diocese determine whether or not the pastor of a parish must live in the church rectory? In this case, I am referring to a church rectory that is not being renovated or has been condemned by the city due to some structural problems. Our new pastor does not live in our parish’s rectory but the one that just moved on to another parish did reside in our parish rectory.

Dear J

The local ordinary (bishop) can require his priests to live in a rectory. He has that authority.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
