Especially when it’s the venerable 60 Minutes:rolleyes:
Seriously, it seems this thread has gotten off track. It’s despicable what Turkey has/is doing. Whether Catholic or Orthodox, it doesn’t matter-we’re all the Body of Christ-we need to continue to pray earnestly for their situation to improve!
God Bless
Now I understand why Pope Benedict XVI was so adamant against Turkey joining the EU.

How awful 😦
Something needs to be done! It’s a shame that Turkish law mandates who can and can’t succeed Patriarch B… perhaps Rome can do something.
Thank you for your prayers!

Just watched this on 60 Minuets. My sincerest of prayers for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being persecuted for His Holy Name in Turkey and other places.

It made me sick to see how the state has over taken religious liberty and freedom in so rich a country.
Thank you for your prayers!

Call me unsurprised that the “religion of peace” is intolerant of others…

My prayers for the Christians in Turkey…the Christians in Iraq are facing annihilation as well, and also the ancient Palestinian Catholic Christians, descendants of the Jews who accepted Christ.

I know this is not a Catholic news Item, but it doesn’t fit in the other threads also.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the leader of the 300 million-member Orthodox Christian Church, feels “crucified” living in Turkey under a government he says would like to see his nearly 2,000-year-old Patriarchate die out.

His All Holiness speaks to 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon for a story to be broadcast this Sunday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Orthodox Christians trace their roots to the earliest days of Christianity but do not answer to papal authority in Rome. Bartholomew is, in effect, their pope. The Patriarchate in Istanbul, Turkey, dates back to Roman times, when the city, then Constantinople, was the center of Christianity. …Read more
I read the link provided and it’s amazing how much the interviewer got wrong.

Istanbul was originally Byzantium and in the early first century by the Apostle St. Andrew. The city was re-named Constantinople by Roman Emperor Constantine when he moved the Capitol City of Rome to Byzantium.

Also, there is indeed a Cathedral there, but it was taken over by the Muslim Turks about 500 years ago. It’s called Agia Sophia or Holy Wisdom.

The Pope is a Patriarch and Patriach Bartholomew is a Patriach. One has it’s roots in Rome founded by the Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul and the other in Byzantium/Constantinople founded by the Apostle St. Andrew. Both hold Apostolic Succession and both are Equals. However, the Pope “claims” more authority, even supremacy and infallibility. These “claims” are false as proved by the history and Councils of the Christian Church.

The other errors too combined to give me an iritation headache, but what can I do?

The more important thing is that this has been an on-going problem in Turkey for centuries and is continuing to get worse. I appreciate the prayers of those on this thread.

A war was necessary to free Greece from Islamic Oppressors, but with so few Orthodox in Turkey war is not only highly unlikely, but seems that it would certainly wipe out all remaining Christians. Although God has intervened and given miraculous results of such wars in the past.

I had to laugh & cry when reading the post that said something about Rome “doing” something - what is the Pope going to order yet another Crusade? The 5th Crusade is what weakened Constantinople so much so that the Muslim Turks were able to easily over take it about 2 centuries later. The Church of Rome played, historically, a huge role in causing the situation there. Of course the Islamic Turks bear the largest portion of fault. May God have mercy on both peoples who have persecuted the Orthodox Church in Constantinople.

I love the idea of transferring the See to Mount Athos there couldn’t possibly be any place better to influence and guide the Patriarch while in exile. But I also agree that it should be a last resort as all the relics and holy articles that would left in the hands of the heathen nation.

Lord have mercy!

Jesus gave St. Andrew the “keys” too?

SD

Jesus gave all the Apostles the “keys”.
“And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.”… (italics added)

He gave them all the power to bind and loose, but only Peter gets the “keys”.

Yes He did. Jesus gave each of the Apostles the “key” and the power to “bind and loose”. Not only does Scripture confirm this, but the early Church Fathers do as well.

But let’s not get this thread off topic. You may create a new thread to address any questions you have on that issue, if you’d like.

You miss understand Sacred Scripture. Read the early Church Fathers.

Again, please begin another thread on this issue, so this one does not go off topic.

I also feel pain for those Christians, and I find it very admirable that the Patriarch is willing to stand his ground in the mist of all that suffering… He’s not the first to be crucified with Christ, as he’s following excellent examples in many of the Saints.

Its not the first time I’ve been told that, and probably not the last

On the ECFs… I have… that’s why I’m Catholic.

I don’t think I need to start another thread on the importance of Peter… There was a poke taken at the CC and it was my duty to defend her… I feel I’ve done that so carry on.

With all respect due to the Petrine ministry, the Patriarchal ministry is equal to it, ‘servatis servandis,’ in Eastern ecclesiology. Until this is taken into consideration by the Roman ecclesiology, no progress will be made in ecumenical dialogue.

There’s been no poke at all. The the fact is the keys were given to each of the Apostles, the early Church Fathers wrote about it and as Michael quoted the Catholic Church still recognizes it with the exception of parts of the Roman Rite. Now if you think that the early Church Fathers and Catholic Patriarchs are taking a poke at the Catholic Church, I don’t know what to tell you.

Wrong the keys were given just to St.
Peter.

Matthew 16:18-19,

“That **thou **art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to **thee **the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”
