Gary, thanks for the link to the speech of the Ecumenical Patriarch. As noted, he was the sole representative of Orthodoxy present at the commencement of the Year of Faith, yet as Ecumenical Patriarch, his presence should not be discounted. Consistently for him, his speech was contemplative and characteristically honest, yet hopeful. May God grant him many years!

Agreed. I didn’t realize he was the only Orthodox representative there, but I am happy he was present. His speech was wonderful as well. Many years!

I caught it live last night, I have to tell you he gave a heartfelt speech which I’m sure everyone felt.

So the Council of the Orthodox is without a doubt coming. 👍

Axios!

It does seem the Moscow Patriarch has chosen to not be present which comes as no surprise. I doubt his All-Holiness is the only Orthodox who has chosen to be there. As Ecumenical Patriarch he does have a special place of honor. In the video of him addressing the crowd I posted earlier he has other clergy beside him. ( I can’t presently open the link OP provided so I don’t know if the Orthodox clergy standing next to His All-Holiness are in what that links to as well.)

Indeed. It says “*The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is the sole representative of Orthodoxy to be invited to the ceremony.” *That may (or may not) imply that he was the only Orthodox on the stage, but in any case I’m sure some Orthodox were in the crowd.

You mean the Pan-Orthodox council?

Right. From the dialogue between the Patriarch and Pope what I thought was interesting since V-II became a topic, is that Benedict assembled all the surviving members of V-II to address the specifics of Bartholomew and the Easts concern, which doesn’t include the ecumenical aspect of V-II which he was quick to acknowledge the entire East felt.

However, as many times as I have heard both speak, this felt very different, progress I believe is slow but sure from all signs.

As for your question to be specific its in his speech.

“the Orthodox Church, we have observed a time of exchange and expectation. For example, the convocation of the first Pan-Orthodox Conferences in Rhodes led to the Pre-Conciliar Pan-Orthodox Conferences in preparation for the Great Council of the Orthodox Churches. These exchanges will demonstrate the unified witness of the Orthodox Church in the modern world. Moreover, it coincided with the “dialogue of love” and heralded the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Church, which was established by our venerable predecessors Pope John Paul II and Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios.”

I have no idea what that quote meant. In any case:

I’m glad you posted that, 5Loaves, I myself was a little puzzled by that statement. (Maybe it was supposed to be "The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is the sole representative of Orthodoxy to be invited to speak at the ceremony.")

Thats what in fact occured. I caught the point of Pete and thanks for the list 5. 😉

I can’t find it on google now since that was last night. Have to look for another with the entire context of the speech which ironic I found it on youtube but the comments were so uncharitable I though better to link it. I shall look.

Almost no Orthodox bishop would attend any liturgy without at least a subdeacon of his in tow, and probably a deacon and priest as well.
