I wonder what sort of restrictions would be replaced on Ukrainian? The article doesn’t specify.

I found this on the New York Times website …

MOSCOW — The Ukrainian Parliament refused on Friday to accept the resignation of its leader and instead adjourned for the summer, leaving uncertain the fate of a contentious bill that would allow local and regional governments to grant official status to Russian and other languages, in addition to Ukrainian.

I am aware of a bill to give Russian (and in theory, other languages) regional language status. On the other hand, I am not aware of any provision to restrict the use of Ukrainian. I’m afraid this article is rather confusing for me. Can anybody tell me how these two are linked?

I’m assuming they perceive a restriction on the use of Ukrainian because the Russian-speaking eastern and southern parts of Ukraine will use Russian instead of Ukrainian upon being given official recognition. :yukonjoe:

I don’t get it either.

I think some people perceive that this is an attempt to pull Ukraine apart, or absorb it into Russia. But so far the legal argument seems to be for allowing Russian or other languages to share official status in some locales, which seems reasonable on the surface.
