I have started to put together all the links to Bible commentaries I can find online. I have used many of the links for years, but I have found more lately. They are in order by book. Feel free to contribute to this thread, this thread can be extremely handy for those who love commentaries from the Fathers and Docotors of the Church. Some of the links come from googlebooks search, which means some may have limited view, but they still provide big portions of the commentaries and can be helpful.

At new advent dot org site, simply enter almost any phrase from scripture in the search box to find many comments made by church fathers and other documents on that text.

Don’t forget Biblia Clerus from the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy.

They’ve done a lot of this compiling, too. Just find the Scripture passage, click on the “Comment button” and you’ll find multiple places in the Early Church Fathers and magisterial documents where the given passage is quoted and/or commented upon.

The Biblia Clerus is a wonderful resource. What makes it different from what I have here is that these links are Bible commentaries, where a Father or Doctor of the Church has focused upon a particular book of the Bible and commented on it verse by verse. That is a little different than how the Biblia Clerus is set up, it is more of a catena. I love catenas, I have actually put together some of those myself. The difference between the two is that in a commentary you get the interpretation of the passages as how the commentator understands it according to how the author of the Biblical book meant for it, as a catena you often get a Father or Doctor of the Church using a particular verse to support a topic that they are teaching, which means it may not actually be a direct interpretation of that verse.

I am not criticizing, I love catenas, I just simply want to point out a difference. Maybe we can use this thread or start another that provides Biblical tools related to the Church Fathers, such as commentaries and catenas!

This is great.

I would like to ask a favor.

How does one go about using such a great tool?

I know that one post addressed it a little, but I could use a little help, thanks!

I think that I saw another poster starting to use these great tools.

Jim Baur,

Is this question directed to me or the one who put the link up for the Biblia Clerus? As for what I have posted, it is very simple. All commentaries of the Biblical books usually begin at the beginning of the Biblical book and the commentator comments on each passage. Some of the links divide each chapter up, which makes it easier to find the passage that you are interested in, while some of the commentaries are all on one web page and will take a little more time to pin point the area that you are looking for but still not hard to do.

This thread is still a work in progress. I plan on adding more as I go. And anybody who finds a Patrisitic commentary that I have not provided is more than welcome to add on, it would be greatly appreciated.

Copland

Thanks!

Yes my question was directed to you.

Does one do search using a particular word and or phrase?

This seems to be what you are saying.

Again, a most helpful and beautiful tool.

WOW!!!

any chance or way to possibly organize this into a HTML linked file instead of having to bounce in and out of a variety of web sites???

Michael,

You could have spoken to me in Ugaretic and I would have understood what you meant just as well. Haha! I am not computer savy and I am not sure what that meant. Would it be easy?
