If you love a really literal version of the Bible and think Eastern Orthodoxy is great and almost there. Consider the Orthodox Study Bible . I’ve had its New Testament and Psalms for years.

I like that it uses the New King James Version. It’s NT is based on the Byzantine majority text, it’s OT has the fullest Orthodox Canon translated from the Septuagint. Both give a fresh angle.

The notes are totally patristic and they’re certainly not anti-Catholic although there are a few points of disagreement on Peter’s role: to be expected.

It’s particularly useful to be working with the NKJV because so many evangelicals use it. I used to use it. My Pentecostal mum uses it. My Anglican wife uses it. It’s very close to the King James version.

The notes are really conservative, untainted by higher biblical criticism like the NJB and NABs. Catholicism and Orthodoxy were the same thing for 1,000 years and I remain enamoured with Vatican II’s patristic renewal, Henri de Lubac et al.

This bible has loads of lovely icon prints. The font is pretty large too. I hate the tiny writing in the RSV2CE. Remember, I’m recommending this as a supplemental bible and a resource not as your one and only.

Actually, the OT of the Orthodox Study Bible is just the King James which is based on the Masoretic text. You will have to wait until the new edition comes out for an Orthodox translation of the Greek Septuagint (unless it has finally been released and that is what you are talking about?)

The NT is the New King James. The release of the full version, which I linked, will use an NKJV template for the OT changed wherever needed to conform with the Septuagint.

If only Catholics had such a resource! And the NKJV is arguably far superior yet essentially mirrors the liberal Protestant RSV.

If I had only searched the forum I would have this thread!

Thanks, TheMese! Your reasons for purchasing the OSB are primarily why I thought it would be invaluable to own.
