When I was confirmed last year, I didn’t really choose a Patron Saint. I decided to have Jesus Christ because in RCIA we were told to choose a new name  (I never understood that part), but because I couldn’t think of a new name, I chose my own name and Jesus our Lord as my Patron since Jessica comes from Jesus.

Does this mean my confirmation wasn’t valid? Did I have to choose a Saint, or was it ok for me to have chosen Jesus? Why were we told to find a new name? Why do we have to choose a Patron?

And for that matter, who was your Patron Saint and why?

The sacrament of Confirmation is still valid, even if you don’t pick a patron saint.

there is no requirement to pick a new name for Confirmation. Your confirmation saint is your baptismal saint. If you are entering the Church and your birth name has a blatantly pagan or non-Christian origin, you may very well be asked to choose an additional name of a saint, this is usually in mission territories.
