I know Our Blessed Mother is a Model of absolute chastity. Yet, for those who suffer from same-sex tendencies, sometimes it is more helpful to pray to a Saint that perhaps was also so inclined in life, but through the Grace of God, came through it and was given the Graces of Chastity.

QUESTION: IS THERE A PATRON SAINT FOR THOSE WITH SAME-SEX ATTRACTION?

St. Charles Lwanga, of the 22 Ugandan Martyrs. These young men and boys were martyred for refusing to give in to the homosexual demands of the Bagandan ruler, Mwanga. Their feast day is June 3.

Saint Agnes of Rome and Saint Thomas Aquinas are patron saints of chastity.

Do you know Why, Lee?
St. Agnes of Rome was around the age of twelve. I believe she wanted to live a celebant life and dedicate herself to God. A prefect wanted her to marry his son and when she refused, she was sentenced to death. I believe Roman law at the time was that virgins could not be executed. So she was stripped and taken naked through the streets to a temple. Several men attempted to rape her, but it is believed that God intervened and would not allow them to do so. Some men even offered to marry her whether it was out of pity or lust, it is not known. She refused to marry them and said it would insult her heavenly spouse. She was martyred.

St. Thomas Aquinas served as a great role model for Christians. At the age of 17, he decided to join the Dominicans in Naples. His family was upset by his decision to join the religious and tried to turn him away from his vocation. They even went as far as tempting him with prostitutes. Their attempts failed and St. Thomas Aquinas persevered in his vocation. As a reward for his fidelity, God bestowed upon him the gift of perfect chastity.

I think St. Charles of Lwanga would be the closest answer to what the question here was. St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, St Agatha - all are amazing saints, for those who struggle with chastity - but what about those who struggle specifically with SSA?

None of these Saints have been tempted to suicide because they knew there was something irreparably wrong with them. None of these Saints faced rejection from BOTH sides - from the secular for pursuing chastity and from the religious for even being tempted the way they are (despite Church teaching and the many Catholics who are so wonderful and caring, there are also many Catholics and many Christians who are simply so disgusted by the thought of SSA that they end up treating strugglers with revulsion). Simply put, while all of these Saints are examples of chastity, none of them are examples of someone with SSA who still got to heaven.

I know it’s not true, but I am often tempted to think that maybe struggling with SSA means that I am already condemned and irredeemable. Otherwise, wouldn’t there be someone already sanctified - already in heaven - who DID struggle with SSA? Surely others DID struggle with SSA in the past, so either some made it to heaven despite or maybe through their cross of SSA, OR maybe it is impossible for someone with SSA to get there.

This is why I want to find a Saint who actually struggled with SSA - even if I have to become that Saint myself one day, though that seems like it’ll be too long a time away to be of much help to the people struggling NOW (myself included) - because it’s not just about purity anymore, it’s about giving hope and proving that it IS possible for a woman to struggle with always wanting to be with other women but never with men to still make it to heaven and be loved by God and be as feminine as He made her to be. Or for a man who maybe experiences attractions exclusively towards men to make to heaven, to be loved by God and to still be as masculine as he was created to be.

Any hints on how one could find this? please?

ps - I am aware that I am reviving a very old thread. This was the first page that came up in a google search for Saints who struggled with SSA, so I thought I’d add my thoughts and see if anyone out there has an answer for me.

St. Maria Goretti is my patron saint for same sex attraction.

She is a patron for chastity in general.

You should learn about chastity
chastityislove.blogspot.com/

Most of the time I just don’t pay attention to it, Jesus alone suffices, Solo Dios Basta, in Spanish. From St. Teresa of Avila.

I really don’t believe in homosexuality. I believe in heart wounds, maybe they are hurt in the past by their father or mother, so that they have difficulty relating to the opposite sex. If a girl, hurt by her father, or a boy, hurt by his mother. Something like that.

But it sure is a cross to bear. With Jesus, all is worth it

May the merciful Jesus bless you

Dear Wayward, Beloved of God,

It is indeed a Cross to have no place to lay one’s head, as Our Lord Himself often felt about His Ministry to a stiff-necked people. SSA and being a Christian seem to endlessly toss one about on rough waters. Not being accepted fully by gay people if you are practicing chastity, and not being accepted fully by your Church because of being a person with SSA. Where does one turn? And, to whom?

If I may suggest, there is a Wordpress Blog called, The CHASTITY Ring, that addresses all these areas of struggle for persons with SSA. thechastityring.com/ They look to Our Lady as their Model and from what I understand, there is a Consecration to Jesus through Our Lady that they speak of, as well. (by St. Louis de Montfort) They also have a Model of living based on the 12 Steps of Recovery in their Archives that is very useful in the struggle.

Also, Fr. Benedict Groeshal from EWTN did a Show of Questions and Answers once, assuring persons struggling with SSA that there ARE Already Canonized Saints who also struggled with it, though there struggle was not made public.

Please know that you are indeed loved and cherished by God. Perhaps a person such as yourself may be a catalyst for change in this world, for the good. Bless You!

Dear Wayward Beloved of God- I just want you to know I have been thinking of you and your situation. I know how hard the struggle can be with the SSa stuff. Sometimes people do not respond because they have not sorted out their own issues.I do beleive that there will be saints who have struggled alone with this issue. The journey to sainthood is so much more difficult because people are sometimes not allowed the freedom to share the struggle of their heart.

I have chosen to live a chaste life in the midst of my SSa struggle.I have found support for living a chaste life with a group of ladies I have met through the chastity ring. It was there we were able to do the twelve step program . This was so much help to me in my journey.
The biggest step for me was moving beyond the shame of even dealing with my issues with the Lord. Not all respond the way you would like to… But one person that really was with me and loved me unconditionally was the Lord…Also I have prayer to Mary to present my struggles to the Father… That helped alot… Please hang in there. I have been praying for you this week.

Dear Wayward,

Michael Voris has beautiful “Vortexes” on SSA. You are intensely loved by God.

Also, I have dealt with suicidal inclinations myself, and have discovered that they are Satan’s way of further tormenting us in our struggles. Have you ever prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet in these times? The optional prayers are additionally helpful:

thedivinemercy.org/message/devotions/praythechaplet.php

In Spanish, the translation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is literally “The Crown of Divine Mercy,” with “divine” not being an adjective describing the “mercy,” but rather as a full idea in itself – that the Mercy in this chaplet is of its own kind. Jesus loves you, and longs to fill you with His Divine Mercy and strength, and expressed to St. Faustina that He wishes to grant unimaginable graces to those who trust in His Mercy.

While I don’t have a particular saint other than the ones listed previously, this chaplet has the power to help you on your way to becoming a saint yourself.

God bless x

your story really touched me . I have a 16 year old daughter who is having a relationship with another girl i cry all the time i dont know how to deal with this and theres not very much out there that is affordable theres not much out there at all. please pray for her her name is shawntell.

@wayward I have SSA and longed for holiness. Its really depressing to deal with it everyday since childhood…much more to find out that there are no saints that suffered this condition and have reached God’s Kingdom. Some parents of children with SSA may have grieved deeply for their child who chose to give in to the open homosexual lifestyle, but the sorrow is much more to those with SSA and lived with suppressing it, distancing ourselves to some people, and even sense doubt in inheriting God’s Kingdom despite efforts for a chaste life. Hope that someday, there will be one to offer us hope and prayers that there is still a chance for people like us, who denied ourselves, to join the courts of Heaven.

I’ve seen some people with SSA cite the especially close relationship between King David and Jonathan. I’m not sure if the suggestion is that their friendship was somehow improper but let’s assume that this is because they were able to experience the fullness of brotherly love in accordance with God’s plan.

So, with all the good suggestions above, especially St Maria Goretti, Imthink you could do worse than to ask David for his prayers and assistance.

Dear wayward,

I have been on the same search as you and have come up empty for what I specifically want. I pray frequently to St. Joseph for he is the patron saint of men but I would love for there to be a saint that specifically suffered the way I do being gay. Hopefully one day there will be a patron saint of homosexuality, maybe it will be me or you. Who knows but God?

The Enemy will try to convince you that you are not holy or that you are damned but I promise you that we are precious in God’s eyes. He created us this way and it is not some disorder as some would like to believe. He gave us this cross of homosexuality to know more intimately the mockery, abandonment, and insults Jesus felt on His way to Calvary. This cross will be the bridge God uses to bring our LGBT brothers and sisters back to the church. I will be praying for you brother, please pray for me.

Just wanted to stand up, say hello, and share my support for your statement.

I hope it might be helpful to suggest we not worry too much about those who can’t see the wisdom in your words. Be at peace, and them think what they will, say what they will, it’s their situation to work out, not yours.

Amen. Thank you. Your support means the world to me. Many prayers are needed for our beautiful Mother Church as we embrace the commandment:*** as I have loved you, so you must love one another *** that Our Lord gave us. Please continue to advocate for our LGBT brothers and sisters. Pray for me.

Always Trust in God’s infinite mercy! Don’t let satan discourage you with his lies!
Please, read Jacques Philippe’s “Trust in God” (or the “way of trust”, I’m not sure about the title in English) and read what he has to say about Saint Thérèse of Lisieux: she wanted to be a saint but realized she was NOTHING like any saint before her. “But instead of being discouraged, I told myself: God would never inspire me with desires which cannot be realized (…)”. She felt she could’t do what other saints did— she had to find a new way… The Little Way! (Google it!)
If you don’t have one yet, find a Spiritual Director and follow him. May God Bless you and remember Saint Josemaria Escriva words: “Not all of us can be rich, wise, famous… But all of us —yes, all of us— are called to be saints”.

I’m shocked that no one mentioned St. Aelred, who wrote seemingly with some familiarity of the temptation monks often have to become overly attached (including physically) to other monks. It’s not at all unrealistic to think that Aelred faced this temptation himself, and it would be terribly insulting to SSA people to claim that it is slander to speculate about such a thing.

Also, Henri Nouwen was a saintly (though not sainted) priest who was same-sex attracted and wrote dozens of amazing books.
