Is there any saint that is known for interceding for those with bipolar? I have made a new friend who just found out today that he has bipolar.

Thanks!

I don’t know if there is a saint particular for those with bi-polar but Saint Dymphna, is the patron saint for those with mental disease.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but I had a friend who wrote a theology thesis on whether the OT prophet Jonah was bipolar. There are certain things in the text, the way he swings between running away and despairing and wishing to die, and the way he is overjoyed at small signs like the bush that God makes to sprout up while he’s sleeping, that might suggest some form of bipolar disorder. It’s just a (fairly wacky) theory though.

Interesting theory and not at all ludicrous I dont think! Mental aberration and illnesses are probably as old as man himself and are certainly not selective - can bob up anywhere even in our saints - after all they are not sinful and hence do not preclude heroic virtue and a prerequisite for sanctity. I think that “normality” is an ever shifting imaginary line created by society to preserve the ‘herd values and norms’. What after all is ‘normal’ for a human being unless defined by and for some kind of group, usually with majority approval, of social value(s) or concept(s) and survival of. If the most common is defined as what is the normal for a human being, it is potentially an insanity considering human nature.

The only saint I know of with a patronage connected to mental illness is St. Dymphna - but there may be more.

Thank you all for your suggestion. I will ask her to pray for my friend.
