One of the local churches did some handouts for him recently around his feast day, because he is portrayed in a large painting on their church ceiling. I noticed they specifically omitted the whole “drove off marauding soldiers at gunpoint” story. Too bad, I thought it was one of the cooler things he did.

He insisted that all of his writings be burned before his death so we’ll never know what he wrote.
It is also interesting that he became a saint because, after he died and was buried, the monks had to abandon their monastery due to unrest or something, and he laid in the abandoned cemetery forgotten for 30 years before anyone came back and thought to pursue sainthood for him.

I know that story. He’s one of my favorite saints. I have in-laws from Rome, Italy. When they came to visit us in the U.S. last year, I took them to the local firing range to shoot semi-auto AR-15’s, AK-47’s and Model 1911 pistols. They loved it! Sadly, they lamented that such recreation is not legal where they live.
