Hello,

I am in the process of figuring my beliefs out. I have made a couple posts explaining my situation and my story from Mass the other day. Someone suggested I choose a Patron Saint. My first thought was Saint Lucy, as my first Mass fell on her feast day, and her story of standing with God in the face of persecution really touched me.

A few questions…
  1. I read that people generally choose a Patron Saint based on a hobby or profession. This would not be the case for me. Is that…abnormal?
  2. I am a male. If I do convert, wouldn’t I be taking a female Saint’s name? Is that allowed?
  3. I read she is the Patron of the blind. Since I am not blind, does she really fit for me? Where could I find stories of other Saints that could possibly be my Patron? I really was touched by her story and how it relates to my life, so I’d want something similar I think.

I am not sure about this, but this is just my opinion.
I think you can have as many patron as you want.If you are female your patron May be man or woman,But I am man and I can more relate to same gender. But of course that you can have a male patron.
Choose patron that you something about(His works,His life, death…),because it is easier to have stronger connection with them if you knew them better. They are our friends.
My Patron is Padre Pio.Why?I read a lot about his life and I feel that God gives huuge graces to him and He was holy and humble.
So i think you can chose any saint you want,But it is easier to relate to someone (FOR ME )who is your gender, and if his or her life was a little bit similiar to yours, for example Job,She or he can understand you better.
God Bless you

There are no rules for choosing a patron saint. People choose any saint that appeals to them. Sometimes they will pick a saint related to their job, or their hobby, or their nationality etc. But often people will say the saint chose them, because they just happened to read or see something about that saint or have the saint come into their mind, somewhat randomly. I know one man who has a devotion to St. Martin de Porres because when he was a young teen, he became seriously ill and his mother happened to find a relic of St. Martin de Porres on the trolley car and took it as a sign that she should pray to St. Martin to help her son recover. He got well and has felt close to St. Martin de Porres ever since.
From the way you are going on about St. Lucy, I’m getting a feeling that maybe “she chose you”.

It is also not uncommon for a person to have multiple patron saints. For example, one will be their “Confirmation saint” whose name they take at Confirmation (I think this is what you’re talking about in (2)) and others will just be other saints they feel close to for some reason.

Many priests are fine with someone choosing a confirmation saint of the opposite gender. There are a handful of priests who have said no, but they seem like the exception rather than the rule. Regarding taking a female name, you’d probably be advised to take the male variant of it, such as Lucian, the same way a girl who wanted St. John or St. George might be told to take the female name Joan or Georgina.

Again, you don’t have to choose a saint based on what they are patron of. To give an example, St. Therese of Lisieux, who is one of the most popular saints for the last century and whose statue is found in almost every church in USA, is a patron of missionaries, florists, gardeners, HIV/ AIDS and tuberculosis victims, but she has probably hundreds of thousands of devotees who don’t fall in any of those categories. With respect to blindness, it doesn’t have to be physical. St. Lucy could very well be guiding you out of spiritual blindness.
Where could I find stories of other Saints that could possibly be my Patron? I really was touched by her story and how it relates to my life, so I’d want something similar I think.
If you just want to read about saints, a good place to start is with the Saint of the Day on Catholic Culture website. Here for example is their page on St. John of the Cross whose feast day was yesterday.

There’s no comprehensive list, especially further back in history, but this site is one of the most exhaustive I’ve seen:

I’m on my phone at the moment, so not sure how this compares on other screens, but at the bottom under the calendar is a “Lists” section that might be helpful.

And I agree with all that @Tis_Bearself said above.

There are several ways to interpret blindness - physical blindness and spiritual blindness. So yes, St. Lucy may be a fit in that you are in the process of figuring out your beliefs. I chose St. Monica who is typically identified as the patron saint of abusive marriages. My draw to her is that she never gave up praying for her son St. Augustine - and I will never give up praying for my children.

I chose Saint Michael the Archangel for my patron and Confirmation Saint.

My draw to him is the spiritual warrior thing.

I feel close to Saint Michael because he’s God’s Champion, the Patron Saint of Confession, and the all around model of what it means to fight battles with the devil and his angels.

The other saints I feel drawn to are Saint Ignatius of Loyola, as I respect him and the Jesuits and feel drawn to his spirituality, Saint Benedict of Nursia for his example taught me what Christian faith and humility is and of course, Our Lady; for she drew me home through her Rosary and she’s such a wonderful Saint all the way around. Can’t say enough about her.

I’m also consecrated to her Immaculate Heart.

As a fellow convert, I also found myself in a sudden position of choosing a patron… I picked St Gemma for my official patron for the sacrament of Confirmation, but I also have several other saints that I am very close to… St Edmund Campion, St Gabriel Possenti, St Bernadette. In my experience, sometimes you pick the saint because you personally identify with them, and sometimes they pick you and you can’t get away from it.
As to whether or not you could take St Lucy as your official confirmation saint, that seems to vary depending on your priest. Officially you can, but some priests prefer you take a same gendered patron. If so,you have lots of time to make new friends.
although you might find a saint through the official patronage of the saint, and it’s certainly worth looking up the patron of your name, profession, country, hobbies, etc, but don’t limit yourself to that. The simplest way, as others have said, to follow a book or website that gives the saint for the day.
Just look at it as making friends, and have fun!

Greetings in Christ,
  1. It is not abnormal at all. I have special devotions to numerous Saints, even though they are the Patrons of things that sometimes aren’t very specific to me.
  2. I think you can take a female, but I am very unsure. Talk to your pastor.
  3. The Saint can still be a great choice for you.
Saint Lucy, ora pro nobis!
Merry Christmas and may God bless you through the intersession of Our Lady and The glorious Marty Saint Lucy.
