Im not sure this is the proper forum if so please move it, I was not born Catholic so I was wondering how do i figure out who is my Patron Saint/ If its a choice how do i pick one?

You pick one.
It should be one of your closest spiritual friends. They are to be a model to you and intercessor before God on your behalf.

The most common way people pick them is one who shares the same name as you do, one who just for whatever reason interests you, one in which you relate most closely to or one who had the same major vices/sins that you face and whom they were able to overcome with the help of Gods grace.

Read about some and find the one whom you connect to the most. Many websites out there listen huuuuge lists of them and offering a little background info on them. You could start there…AFTER you go see Jesus in the blessed sacrament and ask Him to inspire you to find a good patron saint to help coach you along your way in this life.

God bless

So probably not a wise move to pick the one lining up with my birthday- “Blessed Waldo” and i dont have much in common

lol.

Put some thought into it…The catholic church, unlike many other Christian denomenations …you see all these pictures and statues and there’s all these devotions and feast days honoring saints and so forth… The church is really trying to bring heaven into your mind and heart and have its reality all around you. One of the coolest things about Catholicism in my mind is that we really impress the idea that we’re one huge living family!

A patron saint is just another extension of all of that… another spiritual sibling you are having the opportunity to connect with.

What little Ive seen so far is very different than UMC, I’ll never knock the UMC though its been a huge part of my life and done alot for me

oh of course! Gods there too! He meets all of us where we are and in the realm of our own understandings and journey.

You’ll never be able to thank them enough there I’m sure…cause they were a conduit for God to speak with u up till this point!

You need to pray for them too that their journey will only continue to strengthen and bring them closer to Gods heart.

Is it ok to have more than one patron saint? Like a personal one and a professional one?

Yep its a new step in life for me, Im looking forward to it, God Bless you man

lol, it’s always been kinda tradition to have one patron saint.
But any good catholic is friends with a whole slew of saints! They are our brothers and sisters and a valuable resource to us and should be used often.

Hi T,

It can be the name of a Saint whom you greatly admire.

If you find trying to learn about them all at once to be kind of overwhelming, you can try doing what I do, and that is to get on an e-mail list with a “Saint of the Day” website. There are different ones out there. You get a daily e-mail reminding you of which Saint’s Feast Day it is in the church, (or “day of remembrance”) if you will.

It is a nice way of learning about them without having to pick up a large book all at once and trying to read everything in it.

Well… For starters… See if there is one which has your surname, or if your a carpenter for example… See if there is one as a builder… I never realised it… But there is a saint Marinus…
Perhaps find one that is obscure … There is a lot to choose from

In my case and others that I know of, it seems as though they pick you, or rather, Our Lord will place this Saint in your path in some way; this comes after prayer and seeking out the Heart of Our Lord. I’ve heard some say, choose a Saint who shares certain things, name, backgrounds, vocations, ethnicity etc. with you. This is good; but I also like the idea of choosing a Saint who is strongest where you are weakest. For instance, I was initially drawn to St. John of the Cross through his poetry and mysticism; but as I dove deeper into his life and teachings I found that he was excellently humble and forgiving and I have struggled with controlling my temper, my anger and forgiving others their faults. In the end I wanted to know how it is to love Our Lord (the Beloved) with the intensity that he did and will forever.

I found that you don’t even have to stick to saints of the same sex - I’m a female, and my patron saint is Philip of Neri - the patron saint of joy. I read his biography, liked what I saw, and made my choice.

Your Patron Saint traditionally is your name sake. Whatever your first name is, could be your Patron Saint. As Catholics, traditionally we are Baptized a Saint’s name. Although today that has somewhat changed. In my case, my first name is not a saint’s name, but my middle name is. So, my Patron Saint is my middle name.
