Wasn’t quite sure where to put this, but it’s kind of family related as it pertains to my wedding.

So, as we all know, it is rather hard to find modest dresses for weddings. I found the perfect wedding dress for me, it even comes with a bolero jacket for Mass! But, here’s the problem. The bridesmaid dresses are strapless. So, I wanted to make them a shrug to wear during Mass. Their dresses have a center portion of black lace, so I hoped to make the shrug out of black lace.

Only thing is, I can’t find a pattern for a shrug anywhere! Must not really be in style or something…

Is there any other sewers out there who would know of a pattern for a shrug?

Otherwise I thought perhaps I could cut up an old shirt to make a sort of pattern, but not sure if I can get that to turn out right…

This is so frustrating!

I was wondering if the bridesmaid dresses are coming from a specialty shop?

Because you can always ask the seamstress that you need something for modesty for the Church. They might be able to make something, or the dress company might already make a matching cover.

I think it might be hard to make them yourself (unless you are a really great seamstress)

Or you could try making a shawl?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

No, they’re not from a specialty shop, it’s just a normal dress shop. I think they’re actually made in China, but then what isn’t these days?

Thanks to the last poster, I found a cap sleeve one like I was hoping to find, modestprom.com/images/capsleeveshrugdone.jpg

Now I’ll just have to see if I can make it… Otherwise I’ll try making a pattern from a shirt. I’m not an expert seamstress but I have been sewing since I was 8, and my grandma is a seamstress, so if all else fails I’ll ask her if she has any ideas.

I just hoped someone else knew of a pre-made pattern for a cap sleeve shrug. You’d think there’d be more out there for us Catholics! Although I know many people don’t go conservative with covered shoulders. But for me, I don’t wear sleeveless to Mass, so why should I for the wedding?

Those two patterns are great! I myself think that G, H, or I from the first pattern would entail the least amount of work. I hope the original poster likes this.

A friend of mine had her bridesmaids wear wraps that were tied in the back (I can’t remember what she did to tie them in the back, but they stayed tied), but it had the shrug look. Let me know if you need me to explein it better :D.

I know what lifeisbeautiful means. My hubby’s cousin got married and the b-maids wore what she described.

It literally is a long rectangle of fabric, spread across the back and wrapped around and under the upper arms. The ends are brought back together at the spine and tied in a bow. Just pulling your arms a bit forward keeps it on.

Simple.

Ditto what the pp’s said about the rectangle tied behind the back. I saw a lady in mass the other day who had done that and it looked great! Rectangles would sure be a breeze to sew! 😛

Also look at Etsy - there are tons of wedding ideas there, and I see shrugs all the time. Look for patterns there too.
