Paul VI was from the Ambrosian Rite. When he became Pope, did he have to celebrate Mass in the Roman Rite?

The Latin Catholic Church has many liturgical rites. Also there are many eastern Catholic liturgical rites corresponding to various eastern Catholic sui iuris churches. The Pope has the authority to celebrate in any Catholic liturgical rite.

Of course. But naturally, as the bishop of Rome, he celebrated the Roman Rite.

He would almost certainly have been bi-ritual from the start of his priesthood and would have celebrated the Roman Rite during his time in Rome (both as a graduate student and in the Curia) as well as while Nuncio to Poland.

When a priest is “from” a Rite what we really means is that when he was “incardinated” into the Bishop’s Diocese at his ordination, he entered into the rite that the Bishop has. He was from Milan hence Ambrosian Rite.
We also have priests that are dual rite for example Fr. Mitch Pacwa, is dual rite Roman and Maronite Rites.
When Paul VI became Pope he did so by becoming Bishop of Rome. And as such he also has to celebrate mass according to the Church where he is Bishop.
But he will always also be Ambrosian Rite, Hence dual Rite.
Also since the Pope is the law giver for the Catholic Church I would think he can offer mass in any rite that is appropriate to the church he visits. Don’t quote me on that since I am not a canon lawyer nor do I play one on TV.
Peace!

The Ambrosian Missal was under revision from Vatican II, until it was published in 1976 and revised in 1978. It has two medieval Ambrosian eucharistic prayers that are like the oriental churches use.

Just for clarity, Paul VI was born and raised in Brescia, a Roman rite diocese. He did study in Milan, but probably was not part of the Ambrosian rite until he was made successor to St Ambrose as the archbishop of Milan in 1954.

He probably retained some influence over the revision of the Ambrosian rite as ex archbishop.
