Does anyone know if the following quote is real:

"the opening to the world has become a veritable invasion of the Church by worldly thinking. We have perhaps been too weak and imprudent." – Pope Paul VI, speech, November 23, 1973

I have searched for this speech in order to see the full context and I have not been able to find it. Is it bogus? I have seen this quoted in articles on ewtn and adoremus. The vatican website shows only a speech for the exposition of The Shroud of Turin for this day. If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.

Although I can find numerous places where this is cited, I can find nothing that indicates it is a real quote from the pope. It surely is not listed as a speech that Pope Paul VI gave on that day by the Vatican, and they are pretty thorough about getting material up, regardless of what it contains.

It seems prudent, then, to assume it is a fabrication. In fact, most of the places it is cited are sites that are in opposition to the Church (that is, so-called Traditionalist sites).

Yes, that seems to be where the quote has emanated from. I actually have the book. The author was a peritus at Vatican II. The problem is, he cites only what I quoted and the date. It does not say who the Pope was addressing, where he was, or what the speech was about.

At this point, that’s what I am assuming as well.
