In point of fact, St. Paul was seen in the early Church as being very pro-woman. That’s why he was used as such a pro-woman character in the Acts of Paul and Thecla. (A sort of early Christian historical novel/bio of St. Thecla, an early Christian lady who lived to a great age and inspired a lot of people. People at the time differed over whether it was meant as a fraud to make the local saint more famous, or was just for art. Anyway, full of weird stuff but very fun as a read.) (Also, people back then mainly thought of St Paul as a mystic. It’s pretty funny sometimes to see these shifts in attitudes. Probably St. Paul wasn’t stern at all, compared with certain other male religious leaders.)
