Paul - Was He an Apostle

Paul was not one of the original 12 Apostles.

I often hear people refer to him as “the Apostle Paul”.

Is this term correct?

Also, we consider our bishops being in the apostolic succession of the apostles and insist that our popes have direct apostolic succession back to Peter. IIRC, Paul was a bishop.

If anyone can shed light on Paul for me I would appreciate the help.
 
Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but apostles weren’t disciples of Jesus per se. They were followers of Christ, but didn’t know him while he was alive. So, Paul is an apostle but not one of the 12 disciples. Once again, please correct me if I’m wrong. But I’m pretty sure I’m on the right path here.

no he called himself an apostle, but he was not an eye witness of Jesus, he was not one of the 12. Apostle just means “one sent.”

Paul an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead…

Paul was an apostle; this and his other epistles, as well as the evident commission Jesus gave him after his conversion makes it clear that he is an apostle.

He just wasn’t one of the Twelve.
 
The Church has always honored 14 apostles–the twelve (including St. Matthias) and the two divinely-called apostles of scripture: Sts. Paul and Barnabas.
