Paul's position on the use of YHWH

In its recent letter forbidding the use of the tetragrammaton, the CDW stated that this was following in the tradition of the early Church. Somewhere in the next 1500 years that rule was dropped in practice.

Makes perfect sense that the Church of Jerusalem, led by Jews, would follow this approach. I’m not quite as certain about the Pauline Church.

I’m curious whether there are any passages from scripture that suggest Paul retained the Jewish custom, or that he rejected this as he did the dietary laws?

Well, I don’t believe the Name ever occurs in the New Testament. It’s always “theos” (God) or “kyrios” (Lord). Even when the writer is quoting an Old Testament passage in which the Name appears, “Kyrios” will be substituted just as “Lord” often is today in English Bibles (and as “Adonai” was in reading aloud from the Hebrew Scriptures).

That would seem to indicate that all the New Testament authors, including Paul, followed the traditional stricture. Paul was, after all, an extremely devout and proud Jew, even though he opposed laying the full requirements of the Old Law on Gentile converts.
