Did anyone see the PBS special on Michelangelo? It was about an art historian who claims to have discovered that the artist was involved with a group that looked to “reform” the Church from within to match more closely with the Lutheran
currents of the day; in particular Sola Fidei.

That is an interesting claim as Michelangelo did most of his work before the Protestant Reformation. The only work I can find that he did after the Reformation (in regards to the Church) is “The Last Judgment.”

Did it mention a specific work of his?

The tomb for Pope Julian was one of the works they focused on.

The program was riddled with speculation and antiCatholic theology. I could only watch about 10 minutes and realized it was all the same old stuff.

Ok, so that tomb was started in 1503 and according to resources I have found was never finished.

I would be interested to see if they show his original artwork being changed once Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the Church 14 years later. It seems unlikely that Michelangelo was Lutheran before Luther.
