How can this be about Peace and Love?

Mathew 10:34-36

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and a man’s foes will be those of his own household.”

How can this be about Peace and Love?

Will those who follow Christ find Peace and Love in Him?
Will those who Follow Christ have to deal with those who reject Christ?
Will this not cause friction and conflict?

Did not Jesus tell us tha the first two commandments are the basis of all the Law and Prophets?
What do these two commandments deal with? Love - And through that Love, Peace in God.

The Conflict that Jesus refers to is the one which will begin to seperate the wheat from the chaff. It refers to the fact that people will either fully accept Christ and salvation, or they will reject it. There can be no in between for us. Choose. Earthly things or heavenly things. Love of God and neighbor, or compromise. Choose.

From a Catholic perspective…
How do we know the Truth of Christ?

Consider how hard it can be to follow church teachings. How you may have to separate from family members.

Consider that by following Christ, you are one people, one family with the Church. This means every person regardeless of their tribe, race, country is your brother. You share the same new civilization. Within the Church, we have a new humanity.

By following Christ we are set free from things like racism and other tribal or ‘old family’ bonds. People who have attended things like World Youth Days have experience this universality that now other people can experience other than catholics. A strong sens of being so many, so diverse, yet so the same in the depth of our hearts.

People who may be fighting in their lands like Israel and Gaza today, can meet toghether as real catholic and not feel this hatred those who are not in Christ fill. Anywhere you can go in the world you can find a catholic parish and feel home.
In Christ, we are no strangers toward each other anymore. The only separation is between darkness and light. Between good and evil. This is why Christ speaks of making a radical decision if you are to experience this communion of love and peace.

Christ did not come to make peace between good and evil (as some humanist suppose they can do), but to separate them clearly and definatevely.

How do we know the Truth of Christ?

The crucifixion is very awe inspiring to me. There lying on a cross is man on fire for Love. Love that finds, seeks, weeps, and opens His arms for the salvation of the world.

When we think of following Jesus we should consider, delve into the mystery of the cross. There you will find Truth, in the cross of Jesus Christ.

From a Catholic perspective…
How do we know the Truth of Christ?

It depends on how we define “Know”.
I cannot give you a “Catholic” explanation becasue I am not that well read.
For me it is a Truth that is written on my heart.
That may not stand up to the “Scientific” definition of “Know” but then “Love” can hardly be explained by scinece.

The peace Jesus came to establish was peace between God and man - not peace on earth.

When Jesus spoke those words, there were as yet no Christians! As people came to believe in Him and accept the peace He provided between God and man (in other words, convert to Christianity) it could often produce conflict within family circles. (Eg. a Jewish wife who may want to convert while her husband remained a staunch Jew.) It still happens today. And it is usually close family members (father, daughter, mother, in-laws) that are likely to be most angry and upset, as opposed to friends and acquaintances.
