Peace be with you and colds:)

Often, when I am sick, I bring hand sanitizer to use right before the offering each other a sign of peace at mass so that I do not spread my ick to everyone.

Couldn’t find mine today, and thought of a creative way to avoid hand shaking:

“Peace be with you, but not my cold” hehe, that got a chuckle and a thank you from those around me.

I almost think, that during flu season, it would be good if the priest would announce, “Please, if you are sick, cross your arms over your chest and nod as you offer peace so your brothers and sisters know you cannot shake hands and need their prayers for wellness in lieu of spreading germs!”

Our priest sometimes solves this quite simply during cold and flu season.
He says, “now, let us exchange a verbal sign of peace.”

I have mild cold, but still shook hands; I did refrain from drink from the cup and only took the body. Fortunately I just washed my hands before Mass and I didn’t hold hands during the Our Father. I try not to hold hand even when I don’t have a cold. Never would appreciate spreading or catching a cold. A man sitting ahead of me let me know he had cold, and I was grateful of that.

I don’t generally have a problem with the sign of peace at all. There was an incident once at Mass where a man in front of us was using his hand and shirt sleeve near continuously to wipe his nose (in between loud sniffles). I finally handed him a pack of tissues from my purse because eh I was getting pretty grossed out. I thought no way would he extend his hand for the sign of peace but he did. I shook his hand because I felt bad not to. My husband and daughter shook his hand also.

I leaned over after the sign of peace and whispered to my daughter to keep her hands away from her face. Immediately after Mass we all went in the bathroom and thoroughly washed our hands. None of us got sick.

Our priest actually asks that people whom are really ill such as the flu etc not to go to mass, but make up for it in deep prayer, confession and attend mass as soon as possible… He feels that even with the person being inside the building since these infections travel through the air, that well-even if you cover your mouth up with a mask that the bacteria is there while you breathe!!

I understand him because well, I have been so sick the past several months it’s not even funny! Just when I got off my cold, got my voice back, I got the flu, when I got off the flu, got ear infection and sinus infection, got off of that, now I have my allergies and a cold all over again, and I feel as if I have another ear infection coming back! I have been going to mass and everyone is sick, lol, I go to work and everyone is sick, my kids go to school and someone has something!!! LOL

SO yeah I understand why my priest would feel that way I mean if I could I would stay at home secluded and under a huge steam of disinfectant!!! lol

Well I got one, I work from home, and sure enough I went to mass Saturday night, I noticed a family come to mass late and seat themselves behind me, one of which was sneezing more than one should. Now I woke up all sore throated, lumps on my tongue. Argh! Isn’t there a dispensation for people, I mean if I miss a mass, I will watch in on EWTN. Oh I feel miserable.
